Because the Players' Union won't let them fold. And you can't fold just one team or you'd have an unbalanced schedule. (No league wants an odd number of teams.)
MLB had talked about contracting two teams four years ago. (Twins and Expos.) But the Players' Union put a stop to it and the Expos got moved to Washington.
Don't hold your breath on contraction.

Pirates & Marlins then? Marlins more so for revenue reasons, correct? lol @ 2 titles in 8 years & still little to no following. I guess it's the wackness after the titles that doesn't help the fans stick. How can baseball be a failure in a city like Miami? Crazy...

yea i know
but contraction would be great
tampa bay devil rays should be gone too, theyve had enough cracks at it
1. MLB will not let one of the oldest teams in history be contracted
2. with the issues the Penguins have in the NHL, getting rid of the Pirates would be a big problem
3. you can't just contract one team. You'd have to take another team out of the equasion. So what's the other team you wanna get rid of?
4. The owners don't wanna spend money. It's about as hard to get a free agent to Pittsburgh as it is to get someone to play for the T'wolves in the NBA. That's why Marc Cuban wanted to buy the team (he was denied).
5. Bad luck. Every year they draft a pitcher in the first round. None of them have really panned out. They all seem to get injured somehow and the other pitchers got rushed up because the team was desperate, leading them to get injured or to be bad themselves (Zach Duke, Oliver Perez, Jon Van Benschoten are big examples of this). Aside from Jason Bay who they got from SD and Freddy Sanchez who they got from Boston, it's just been hard for them to get positional hitters to stick there.

Weather kinda kills some of baseball's buzz in Miami. (Too humid, the occasional hurricane, etc.) It also doesn't help that they play in a football stadium and there are no plans for a baseball-exclusive park. (The Nationals are getting their park in a couple of years.) But the Marlins won't fold yet. It's hard to tell a fanbase that has seen two championships that they're going to just fold. Expect the Marlins to move before they fold.

If a team gets contracted, what happens to the players? Do they get paid whats still due on their contracts or do they just go out and sign elsewhere?
I'm not sure. But you'd better believe the MLBPA would make sure the players on the contracted team get paid one way or another.
And yeah, like tremonthustler said, MLB will not want to see one of its oldest teams go by the boards. The Expos moving to Washington is one thing. The Pirates folding, even in this weakened state, would be a big blow to the game.

The Marlins would get moved before they are contracted. They have talent, a young nucleus and always a threat to eventually become a powerhouse. Problem is, they want a new stadium and fans don't wanna give them one. So ownership thinks "why should we have a huge payroll when no one seems to give a damn?".
Also, realignment would mess stuff up. I remember proposals of Texas to the AL Central or Arizona to the AL West if the Twins and Expos were done. Say Pirates and Marlins would be gone, then most likely there would be teams switching divisions, maybe switching leagues to keep sh*t competitive

they are put in a dispersal draft (a supplemental draft pretty much). How they order it, I don't know. How the minor leagues get affected, I don't know. I do know their contracts remain the same and that you pick the players knowing you pick up the tab (in other words, if the Rockies were contracted, nobody is gonna draft Todd Helton)
since only 4 teams from each league make the playoffs anyway (And its the same teams every year). The MLB should contract about 10 teams redistribute those players and make the remaining teams stronger.

kansas city royals too
1 winning season last 15 years
i cant even think of anyone on their team besides george brett
Royals won in '85 and have a loyal fanbase. Plus, a Wal-Mart heir bought the team, so they'll start spending and getting in the mix soon. Getting Gil Meche was a start.

Won't happen. And shouldn't. The most that should be contracted is two so you have 14 teams in each league.

whats the point?we all know the yankees and sox are making the offs every year so that leaves 2 spots for the remaining 10 teams or so (not counting the teams in the al east)
Its fruitless
