Post Square Enix CEO: 360, PS3 too complex

Talking up the DS and Wii, Yoichi Wada believes that the two next-gen consoles are 'over-engineered' and 'mismatched' to gamers' needs.

Quote:
Square Enix dropped the bombshell in December that the latest in its Dragon Quest role-playing game series, Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night (working title), would be coming exclusively to the DS. As the last installments of the game--which is very, very big in Japan--were on Sony's PlayStation 2 and original PlayStation, the news was a head-scratcher for many.

Square Enix's president and CEO, Yoichi Wada, has now explained the decision, which he says was made so that the "widest array of people" could play the latest installment in the RPG series, reports the Financial Times. He believes bringing the series to the DS means the game could find fans outside of its current audience.

Wada appears not to be a fan of complex next-gen consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, which he calls "over-engineered." He told the newspaper, "There are too many specs--and you also need a high-definition TV, a broadband connection, and a deep knowledge of gaming--these consoles are mismatched to today's environment. In a year or two years, they will fare better."

The Square Enix executive believes that the ground has shifted in the gaming industry. "[Whereas] in the old days,we could just focus on the PlayStation or the Game Boy," he said, "the environment has changed completely." A new breed of gamer has also emerged on the back of the release of Nintendo's marketing push to embrace nontraditional gamers--including women and older people--and this means, Wada says, "we have to make games for all kinds of people."

Wada is just lubing up Sony's asshole with vaseline with this. This gamespot story is mostly based on this Financial Times story. This is the best part from that interview.

Over engineered? You present the technology so that it can grow with the consumer. 2 years from now, when he feels it will fare better, the technology will be more accessible to everyone. It will also be cheaper. If you dont engineer that now, 2 years from now you'll be saying we have to wait 2 years so that everyone can adjust.

I simply can't wait to see the Wii 2 years from now. I honestly think it will be dated and irrelevant. We'll see.

I think the Wii in two years wont be much of a factor. The novelty will have worn off by then.

No games have come out for it, no real games are planned
Otherwise, you would have said the Wii wont die cuz of this game/that game.

I was checkin for supermario when I was a kid, not now.
SuperSmashBros was great @ first, but its nothing special now. PowerStone was better imo.

If Square starts making the majority of their games for the Wii, I certainly won't be giving them money. I want a significant graphical advancement, not something that looks to stretch out last gen another 5 years.

I really dont get all the hoopla over SuperTrashBros?

I had the original... thought it was GREAT at the time.
Dreamed of a online version/etc.

Played Melee a lil bit.. was just more of the same.
It wasnt nothin but Powerstone w/out the 3-D enviroments.. just the 3-D backdrops

We now halfway into 2007, and whats new?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LNd6CANx3o
They've added Snake... oh yeah, its now superAwesomebros now

Take a close look @ the video and what do you see?
Level design actually looks like it took a step backwards... just more 3-D backdrops.. few new moves.

Did I mention it'll be 2players online!

I'd rather play the dreamcast version of the 4player powerstone 2 over live arcade for $5/10 than to pay $50 to play a 2player upgrade to a N64 game that hasnt changed much.

3-D enviroments >>> 3-D backdrops imo
