Real Talk, if you ain't serious don't waste your money.
*Looks at $800 Jazz Guitar rarely played*
If you are serious though that guitar will do for beginning. You might want to look at getting a package with a small amp though, something like this. For the same amount of money you get an okay guitar (epiphone is owned by Gibson who make the best guitars IMO) and an amp, in case your people don't already have one.
As far as books, any of those Mel Bay books will show you the basic chords. Get one with pictures in it so you can see exactly where the hands are placed.

Altar is right....get a Mel Bay book of basic chords and LEARN SOME SCALES FIRST
Ok ,llok I been playing for about 6 years and have not had a teacher but am really self taught..
1. GET A TEACHER.. You save yourself countless hours/days/weeks/months/years! of fustrating self study..
2. Get a Strat ($400) or an Ibenez.. They run cheap and are GOOD enough.. for the first 5 years
3. Get a little amp (40 -80 bucks)..
4. Go to amazon and check out the guitar books, read the comments, see what worked for other people and then order it.. It's better than going to a book store and browsing for hours.
5. Be serious. Learning the guiar requires about 45 mins of work a day EVERY DAY! It's very technical!
6. BE serious. IF you ant ready for the guitar yet, then get a small ($200) keyboard. It will make learning the guitar orders of magnitude easier.
7. good luck!
PS: What kind of music do you want to aim for? I personally play it all but, focus on Jazz, Blues and Rock (neoclassical).

blues, jazz, and a lil alternative music. My cultures music is called Kompa and i wanna learn to play those couple songs also. I just want to learn the basics and have a decent guitar that will last me maybe 2 or 3 years. i heard the les pauls are pretty good for beginners. All of people i knew started of young so that the only thing that pushes me a away a lil cause im already 22 with a busy schedule. but i can put in about 30 minutes a day of practice if i really wanted to.
