You don't see George W. Bush going crazy about going there and helping them. I always knew this side of Brasil every since I first started learning more about the culture through visits and through futebol(soccer). The media and tourism industry is always talking about the food, beaches, people and stuff, but a big part of Brasil is the crime and poverty.
Another thing is the media and tourism industries depiction of Brasilians as European beauties. No, they aren't mostly European beauties, they are mostly AFRO-BRASILIAN beauties. Meaning that the majority of Brasil's population has African blood and ancestry in them. Yet the media doesn't show that. Also, the racism in Brasil is just as bad as here. They have a social issue that makes people only show respect to lighter-skinned black people or Brasilians with European heritage only.
Oh, that movie about the Brasilian prisons, I saw that. That was nuts. You can order it from Netflix or Blockbuster online. They talk about the true story that happened, the breakout from the prisoners, the rapings (

) and the murders and violence in the prison. The favelas in Brasil are the United States' ghettos, maybe worse?
