Over the past several years much debate has taken place in regards to

a. What is the difference between Hip Hop and Rap Music

b. What is the difference between a rapper and an MC

The following upload will put and end to that debate. This CD is aprox 79 minutes and contains Hip Hop in its original form. You see, back in the days, MCs would rock live while the DJ would mix breaks in the background. Nowadays a rapper will simply perform his hits. Very few rappers have DJs nowadays. And very few rappers can entertain a crowd without performing songs from their album.

While listening to the above tracks, keep in mind that the audience had never heard those lyrics before, so the audience was paying money to see a rap group with no hits perform. Nowadays, rappers simply perform prerecorded tracks that the audience is familiar with - hit singles (some rappers even lip sync)

That is the difference between Hip Hop vs Rap, MCing vs Rapping. A Rapper simply recites lyrics to a song. An MC can command the crowd without having a hit single.

All of the above mp3s were recorded sometime between 1978-1983. Many of the above groups never had an actual studio recording. To my knowledge groups like Cipher Sounds, The Hypnotizing Tranquilizing 3, Mercedes Ladies, L Brothers and Nice N Nasty never recorded a studio single, their music just circulated around NYC on DJ tapes. Thats how DJs would promote themselves, by circulating tapes of their live shows.

When people say "Hip Hop is Dead" that is what they mean. That the artform captured on this cd no longer exists. And those people are right. You can't name anybody nowadays thats doing what these groups were doing. Nas doesn't even do what these groups were doing. Neither does Jurassic 5 or any of these backpacker groups.

Long Live the Old School and All Praise is Due to Allah for file sharing!!!!!!

Oops, that was the Big Daddy kane Birthday freestyle (1991) featuring - Special Ed, Biz, Smooth B, Masta Ace, Just-Ice, Lakim Shabbazz, (then a "nobody from Boston" grabs the mic) Pos K, Scoob, Scrap, Markey Fresh, Fruikwan, Kane, Jay-Z, Jaz, Ill (Ill Al Scratch)

Lemme see if I can find the mp3 I was looking for. But in the meanwhile, notice the difference between MCs in 91 vs MCs now

BTW, Ill from Ill All Scratch rips it the illest.

This is the one I was looking for, this is all old school cats from 78-83.

Funny thing is that the cats in 91 were carrying on that tradition (kinda) Back in 91, cats still had live DJs. Nowadays, MCs just rap over instrumentals

You got the terms all mixed up. Hip-hop is the culture and rap is the music. Other parts of the hip-hop culture are the clothes we rock, the way we speak, the way we get our hair done, etc.

But I see where you going anyway. The game's lost a lot of MCs/Lyricists/Poets and just been replaced by rappers that hide their ABC lyrics behind a bumping beat.

In 2 years, 90% of the stuff coming out from down south won't even be remembered. 90% of these rappers are flavor of the months and will only stay on as long as they've got someone making good club beats for them to rap over.

No!

Hip Hop is when a DJ is on stage mixing breaks while the mcs is freestyling.

Rap is when a guy is on stage reciting his song over a dat.

The difference is that today, rappers just perform their hits and walk off the stage. Back then, MCs worked the crowd for an hour without actually performing a song.

Somebody please download these mp3s.

Here's another old school show with Grandmaster Flash on the turntable and Melle Mel on the Mic, the show is about an hour long - just Flash and Mel. You'll notice they don't actually perform any songs, Mel just rocks the mic for an hour with Flash mixing breaks. Thats what MCing and DJing is and that what Hip Hop is.

Rapping is just standing on stage performing a song (over a DAT) and when the song is over, you walk off the stage.

Also, Disco Bee was Flash's back up DJ, so when you hear Melle Mel saying "Disco Bee" he is referring to Flash's back up (Flash was probably talking to a girl or going to the bathroom, etc.)

The show was recorded at Christ the King High School and took place sometime in 1980

its not people dont wanna respond...its that u seem so stuck in your idea of what hip hop is that is would seem no one thinks it will produce any meaningful discussion.

this is a very good thread and people can learn from this, but the way its going it looks to be a gathering of elistist views...

and u know it always ends up sounding the same BITTER.
