Mayweather Victory Sets Pay-Per-View Mark

Floyd Mayweather’s split decision against Oscar De La Hoya in Saturday night’s superwelterweight title fight generated 2.15 million pay-per-view buys — eclipsing the 10-year-old record for the second Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson fight.

Mark Taffet, an HBO senior vice president, said the figure was based on reports from cable and satellite operators serving more than 80 percent of the 61 million homes that can order, up from the usual 50 percent.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if the number were adjusted upward,” he said.

Taffet said that HBO officials first believed the fight could generate more than a million pay-per-view buys, at or near the level of De La Hoya’s bouts against Bernard Hopkins, Fernando Vargas and Sugar Shane Mosley. But the network was uncertain whether it would beat the non-heavyweight record of 1.4 million set in 1999 when Félix Trinidad defeated De La Hoya.

“Never in our wildest dreams or waking moments,” Taffet said of shattering the two million mark.

Cable and satellite operators will keep roughly half of the $120 million pay-per-view gross, leaving the fighters to share most of the remainder.

Richard Schaefer, the chief executive of De La Hoya’s company, which promoted the fight, said he expected De La Hoya to receive at least $50 million in his loss, which he said would be a record for a prize fight.
