Default DLH/Mayweather does 2.15 million PPV buys....shatters record

"Floyd-Oscar: 2.15 million buys!
PPV telecast sets all time record
HBO Sports reported today that 2.15 million pay-per-view buys and $120 million in pay-per-view revenue was generated from last Saturday’s mega fight showdown featuring Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. In a fight that set the all-time pay-per-view record by eclipsing the previous mark by a sizable margin of 160,000 buys as well as establishing a new mark for revenue from a pay-per-view telecast, Mayweather scored a split decision victory and captured De La Hoya’s junior middleweight title. The showdown produced 1,225,000 buys from cable systems and 925,000 buys from satellite homes throughout the 50 states."

Jesus. Oscar must have made about $50 million off this being fighter and promoter. After his cut of the PPV, Mayweather probably made at least $20 million. This was expected to do very well, but I don't think anybody thought it would topple Tyson's biggest numbers.

Another fact about the fight....

NO ONE will ever pay to see a rematch. Or any other "big" fights in the future for that matter. America feels like they were hoodwinked!

Watch the fight again closely. Oscar was landing some nice body shots those 1st 7 rounds and caught Floyd at the end of his combos with some nice shots. You dont just count head shots.

Its hard when a guy is on the defensive and not willing to open up. Even if Floyd has a opening,he only throws 1 punch at a time. When Sugar Ray Leonard saw a opening he was not afraid to open up and let his hands go.

Floyd made the fight boring. If Oscar keeps his jab going he wins the fight win ease. He was leading after 9 rounds on the scorecards.

lol, right. Just like no one "ever" payed to watch a PPV fight again after Tyson bit Holyfields ear off. Or how no one "ever" bought a PPV again after the Tyson/McNeely and Seldon debacles. Or how no one "ever" bought a PPV fight again after the Holyfield/Lewis robbery. Or how no one "ever" bought a PPV again after the DLH/Trinidad snoozefest. Or how no one "ever" bought a PPV again after the letdown of Tyson/Lewis. Or how no one "ever" bought a PPV again after people thought DLH was robbed against Mosley in their rematch....Oh wait...

Compared to ALL of those fights, this one was a best case scenerio. Not a great fight, but at least it was competitive and there was zero controversy.

The rematch would do 1.5 million PPV buys guaranteed. DLH/Trinidad II would do 1.5 million as well. Oscar is a cash cow and will continue to be until he retires.

I think Floyd Sr. is gonna train DLH for the second fight. DLH is notorious for burning bridges with ex-trainers and promoters but he kept in contact with Floyd Sr. the whole time even giving him a ticket to the fight. It would be a great promotional hook to sell the second fight too. I don't know if Floyd Sr. is really that pissed at Junior and Roger to train Oscar, it seem like he was more pissed after the fight but I don't speak Mayweather gibberish. Add to the fact everybody is getting rich off this except Senior. If DLH was to offer him $750,000 like he did Roach, or even the $500,000 base and $500,000 bonus for a win like he did the first time around, I can't see Sr. turning it down this time. If Mayweather Sr. trains DLH the second time around, people will watch.

This was supposed to bring boxing back. All I'm sayin is there's no way they do 2 million buys again. Point blank, period.

Seems like you agree with me.

Are you kidding me? Hoya's body shots did NOTHING but hit mayweathers elbow and gloves. Those shots were constantly blocked. Even when Hoya was occasionally throwing his jab. The jab would just be blocked by mayweathers gloves. Now i'd admit a couple of his jabs got passed mayweathers impregnable defense. But other than that, Hoya did very LITTLE damage to Mayweather.

If you are saying Floyd fought a boring fight. I'd most likely assume you've hardly ever watched floyds fights in the past. Floyd fought HIS FIGHT. Not the other way around. Hoya had to re-adjust his game plan to Mayweather benefit. Hoya seemed very stagnanted through out the fight trying to figure out how to simply HIT mayweather. And he couldn't. Floyd dictated the fight since round one. He controlled the tempo and pretty much stopped Hoya's 'Offensive' gameplan.

Mayweather did an excellent job defensively and won 8-4 on my card but Oscar did a very good job defensively in his own right. His high guard and parrying was solid.

The fight was decent, but I can easily see how casual fans would be dissapointed.

Yeah I was reading what the top selling PPVs ever were. Most of them weren't good fights.

Mayweather-De La Hoya, 2007, 2.15 (decent fight)
Holyfield-Tyson II, 1997, 1.99 (worst megafight ever)
Lewis-Tyson, 2002, 1.8 (so-so, only really good if you like Lewis or hate Tyson)
Holyfield-Tyson I, 1996, 1.59 (pretty good fight although it was overrated)
Tyson-McNeeley, 1995, 1.55 (sucked)
Holyfield-Foreman, 1991, 1.4 (pretty good fight)
De La Hoya-Trinidad, 1999, 1.4 (mediocre fight)

Oscar CAKED.... BIG TIME!! the last "official" number i heard was that he made $45 mil. Floyd SHOULD get the majority of that... cuz he did most of the promoting with his mouth... lol. but i'm sure he caked pretty heavy too... just not as much as Oscar. I'm glad that boxers are getting smart, because Don King could have easily pocketed that money.

peace

rematches almost never do as big a number as the first fight, unless the first fight wasn't that big a fight to begin with and it was a big upset. The first time two guys fight, there is generally always going to be more interest because no one knows exactly what will go down. Once they've fought, even if it was a great fight, a lot of the intrigue is then gone.

Besides, it's not about matching the first fights numbers. The first fight is the highest grossing boxing match in the history of the sport. That is not something anyone could expect to match again. Even doing half the original fights numbers would be considered a huge success.
