April 10, 2007 -- MSNBC and CBS radio turned down the dial on Don Imus yesterday, suspending him hours after he made another racial blunder - addressing the Rev. Al Sharpton and a key black congresswoman as "you people."
The beleaguered shock jock, who hosts a WFAN-AM radio show that's simulcast by cable's MSNBC, will be off the air for two weeks starting Monday because of the sexist, racist remarks he made last week.
Imus called Rutgers University women's basketball players "nappy-headed ho's" Wednesday, the morning after the Lady Knights fell in the NCAA title game.
MSNBC officials said they'll keep a close eye on him after he returns to the airwaves.
"This comes after careful consideration in the days since his racist, abhorrent comments were made," according to an MSNBC statement. "Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word."
The suspension is being put off until Monday, in part, so Imus can do previously scheduled broadcast fund-raisers for children's charities this week, the networks said.
Imus has been apologizing ever since making his tasteless remarks, but his contrition campaign skidded off the road in a horrific foot-in-mouth crash yesterday afternoon, as he was appearing on Sharpton's radio show.
Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, questioned whether Imus fully understood how he hurt black women. That's when Imus lost it.
"I do understand that. How do you assume that I don't understand that? Of course I understand that! It's like the old country song, 'God may forgive you, but I won't. Jesus loves you but I don't.' So I can't get any place with you people, but I can get some place with Jesus," ranted Imus, whose show regularly attracts political and media elite as guests.
The "you people" comment, a racial touchstone made infamous by Ross Perot in a 1992 address, ignited a heated exchange.
"Who is 'you people,' Mr. Imus?" asked Sharpton, who wants Imus fired from his morning show.
"You and this woman I'm talking to," Imus responded to Sharpton. "Don't try to hang that on me. That's jive."
"What's jive?" Sharpton shot back.
" 'What do you mean by 'you people?' You know what I meant - you two people," Imus angrily answered. "That's not even fair. You said you were going to be fair. Keep your word!"
"I'm being very fair, I'm being fair. I'm keeping it real," Sharpton said. "I'm in charge here, I'm in charge here. I asked you the question!"
Sharpton then went to commercials and cooler heads prevailed.
Imus' collapse highlighted a roller-coaster 90 minutes that had him alternately deferential and testy toward Sharpton.
At the show's conclusion inside ABC studios on the Upper West Side, Imus thanked Sharpton for having him on.
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity," Imus said. Sharpton didn't immediately respond. Then under his breath, Imus muttered a sarcastic, "You're welcome."
Imus gave a cursory wave as he stood up and left, drawing a slight nod from Sharpton.
After Imus left, Sharpton said the veteran radio host was his own worst enemy.
lol that was actually funny
i think this dude Imus is a dikkhead for his other comments, but damn, sharpton was definitely jus waiting for him to say something like that. i don't think he meant "you people" in a racist way, but dude got at him anyway. i say "you people" to people i'm arguing with all the time, no matter who they are
so do most racist. that's what killed him. you can't be using "you people" after saying something racist. That is like icing on the cake. Like if you said it I don't think I would be offended cause I don't have any cause to suspect you of being racist. But if you were Hev I'd be less likely to give the benefit of the doubt.
i'm officially tired of hearing about this f@ggot.
and if any gays found that offensive, i am truly sorry for my deplorable statement.
This a big issue of major importance we have to talk about it like a lot. What falls out of Imus' mouth although I never cared before really stirs my grits now.
I can understand not always agreeing with him but if he doesnt represent you......who does? and I think she was talking about Imus aka faaggit
How about... ME
Look at my grammar...my vocabulary... my comprehension skills. I'm perfectly capable of representing myself. Al Sharpton is nothing but a cheap opportunist playing on America's racial tensions to make a name and a buck... I want to dissociate myself with him as much as possible

yeah shiggs.. i understand all that. i'm discouraged by what i'm seeing/hearing when it's discussed. that's why i said i was "tired" of it.
either way, that f@ggot isn't fit to stir my cream of wheat.
