Mom forces her kids to beg for money....
April 5, 2007 -- A Yonkers mother of five put an Oliver twist on the normal rules of parenting - forcing her young children to work as panhandlers, au thorities said yesterday.
The unemployed woman's 18-year-old daughter finally foiled the plan when she called cops after her younger brother disappeared from a supermarket that they were sent to beg in front of, according to the Westchester County District Attorney's Office.
Antoinette Jones, 37, made "her 11-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter walk to a Pathmark supermarket, a distance of approximately four miles, to beg patrons of the store and passers-by for money" on Monday, according to the criminal complaint against her.
The 18-year-old called the police at about 7:50 p.m., after she went to use the bathroom, and then noticed that her younger brother was gone, according to Yonkers Police Department Lt. Diane Hessler.
The girl told police that her mother often made them walk to stores to beg. She said they raked in about $30 to $40 at a time.
Jones, who lives on Orchard Place in Yonkers, was notified and came to the store.
The 11-year-old returned a few hours later, but it was unclear where he had been, cops said.
A police officer who had responded said that Jones' 7-year-old son was reported missing from a local ShopRite supermarket on March 25 and was found in a nearby restaurant.
Customers of Pathmark on Central Avenue in Yonkers yesterday were outraged.
"What mother would do that?" asked Francis McKenzie, 46, a mother of three.
Jones pleaded not guilty to endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, in Yonkers City Court on Tuesday. She was released without bail.
She faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
Westchester Child Protective Services removed Jones' kids - the 18-year-old girl, a 17-year-old girl, the 11-year-old boy, the 7-year-old boy, and a 5-year-old boy - and placed them with a family friend, authorities said.
"These children need to be put somewhere where they have a fighting chance," police Capt. Daniel Daly told the Journal News.
