Yeah, they used straight razors....

My dad actually still gets his edged up this way. He goes to an old school barber shop run by old school dudes. Hot towels, mixing their own shaving cream, shine your shoes, jazz music and cigar smoke in the air, etc....

i think shape ups were originally coined in edo era japan by samurai's who were losing their prestige and wanted to find ways to keep money in their pockets by using their amazingly accurate swordsmanship... and since bodyguard work and general security jobs were being held by ninjas (think of day workers who stand out at 7-11 who will work for less money)... Samurai had to find work in different ways.. and thus, with their precision sword work, the shape up as we know it today was born...
