No, it's about public perception. If people think Jays dropping trash and Jim Jones is making people laugh at his expense then Jim wins. It makes no difference at all whether or not Jay uses a more complex rhyming scheme on his dis track or whatever. And Jay will sell more, of course, but he's looking weak right now and if he gets clowned good and doesn't come back strong enough, that'll hurt his image, at least in the hip hop crowd.
I'm not a huge 50 fan but I have one of his recent mixtapes and 50 can spit. If he wanted to go at Jay right now it would be like the Big Bad Wolf going at Little Red Riding Hov.

true. I shouldn't have said "hip hop crowd". I should have said, "the streets". It ain't just about makin more money, though. People value those goods, but other people's wealth doesn't automatically gain respect and loyalty, and Jays new album isn't talking to the streets at all. I predict he'll be hurt by this, but nothing major.
