Israel has apologized for an artillery barrage which killed 18 civilians in Gaza [SN reported], and the Israeli foreign minister called the deaths in the town of Beit Hanoun "a regrettable incident".
Meanwhile the Palestinian government has declared three days of mourning to commemorate the 18 that died, 13 of whom were members of one extended family and died as they were sleeping.
Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, issued a statement saying that he regretted the attack but claimed that Israel's army had fired to prevent rockets being fired into Israel, 10 of which had been fired in the previous 24 hours.
