Not only is he a credible artist, but he has possesed street cred long before street cred was a required "prerequisite" for stardom in the music biz...
Mr. Reid spent 2 brutal years in what many socialiogists have deemed the most disturbing prison facility in the western hemisphere, the infamous G.P (GENERAL PENITENTARY) in spanish town, jamaica for being a gun toting antaognist (Shotta) during the late 70's leading up to the 1980 political civil war between the socialist led PNP PARTY and the capitlist backed JLP party in Kingston.
Junior Reid was also politically active in his native Waterhouse area of Kingston, which still is to this day, PNP territory , and home to many greats such as Nitty Gritty, Tenor Saw, Red Rose and Beenie Man.....
The Waterhouse Posse in terms of political influence and firepower basically make LA based bloods look like the Girl Scouts, they have developed a strong presence in the borough of Brooklyn in N.Y.C as well as Brixton London and Miami.
According to the Wild Apache "SUPERCAT" , it was Reid whom gave him the name "SUPERCAT" as they made each other acquantiance in the General Penientary, Cat said he got the name because Reid respected him not only as a fellow "PNP SOLDIER" but for his ability to "bounce back on his feet" after tragedy.
Something that Reid could identify with well, by promptly embracing the Rastafarian faith as well as becoming a productive businessman with the building of his infamous "ONE BLOOD" studio, as well as being one of the most sought after reggae artists on the performance circuit.
here's a comprehensive bio on his life:
To date, Jamaican-born singer Junior Reid, a devout Rastafarian regarded by many as a messenger from Jah, is best known for the hit singles ‘Foreign Mind’, ‘One Blood’, ‘Boom Shak-a-Lak’ and ‘Listen to the Voices’. He also served as the lead singer for the Grammy Award-winning Reggae group Black Uhuru.
Born on the 6th of June, Delroy "Junior" Reid grew up in the Waterhouse district of West Kingston. Junior began his career at an early age, gaining his initial inspiration from a tough upbringing. He recorded his first single ‘Know Myself’ at age fourteen for the late singer Hugh Mundell, released in the U.K. on the Greensleeves label. He then went on to form his own band, The Voice of Progress, and after a local hit with ‘Minibus Driver’ the group’s success was established with the album of the same name.
At the age of eighteen, Junior was asked to join Black Uhuru as lead singer. The group completed their transformation to international status while he was a member, nominated twice for a Grammy Award in the Reggae category.
After many changes in the music business and an agreed separation among the members of Black Uhuru, Junior returned to the solo arena and started his own production company, J.R. Productions.

you think i forgot when u came at me sideways on that Wu thread??
I remember my bro had all them joints on record when I lived in Jamaica. He use to have a dj set in the storage room and we'd have big ass parties at our house that lasted till the next morning. I was like 3-4 years old and we still have alot of the same shyt on casettes and cds now.
Up some old stuff like Major Mackerel and Tiger, if you got some
After an argument, Ninjaman allegedly shot out the windows of your One Blood studio - do you still talk to him?
I still work with Ninjaman. Me and him did have a little dispute…but you know that Ninjaman is under the influence of many different things. So I have to over look that because people look up to me.
Me and Ninjaman are cool - Ninjaman is a JR Productions artiste. Ninja's biggest selling album was Ting-A-Ling-A-Ling-A-School Pickney Sinting - Junior Reid produced that. That song gave Ninja his first number one as a solo artist.
[Ninja] respects me, that's why I can record two Ninjaman albums - not just anybody can spend the time to work on two Ninjaman albums.
BV heard that you and Bounty Killer fell out after an incident at Champions In Action - what happened?
Bounty Killer and Beenie Man were the headline artists for the show and me and Sizzla were gonna come on a little before them. At the time, there was a little rumour that after the show there was going to be a war between Matches (Matthews) Lane and Tivoli (Gardens). But they knew if Junior Reid came and sing One Blood and Zeeks and The President Dudus (aka World News), Mashing Up The Earth and Sizzla came to bless up the place with righteousness - we would stop the war.
They had me backstage like I was security or something and the show was almost finished so I slipped on stage. Once I touched the stage the place went mad but Bounty Killer walked off.
How can he say that I'm his godfather and his inspiration? How can we sing so much combinations together? When we were travelling in America we hooked up with Busta Rhymes and we all recorded tracks together - so what's the problem? He must be afraid of me.
It ended up being me, Sizzla and Bennie Man mashing up the show and bringing some love. We went there to share some unity but it's like some artistes just want war.
^^^^^^^^so there you have it.....Junior Reid sitting in his studio, while a coked out cowardly Ninjaman shoots out the windows of Reid's studio, because Reid told di fassyhole, that this is a "rasta ting" no "coke sniffing" up in his studio, so after throwing a rage , he went outside bust his gun at the windows, and then ran like puss...after the Waterhouse crew chased him off the property ...then CAUGHT his ass later that evening, and brought him BACK TO THE STUDIO to "work" because as Reid says ...he was a JR ARTIST....JUNIOR REID IS A BOSS!!!!!!!!...respect that!
As for Bounti....this n1gga got mad because he couldn't comprehend JUNIOR REID'S peacemaking efforts by bringing SIZZLA and BEENIEMAN along stage with BOUNTI, whom got vexed like a byatch and ran off the stage......
fukk a GAME and his 5 shot theory...i'm sure BIG FASE begs to differ
