SORRY PEOPLE - U may hate me for saying this but...
Large parts of Hip Hop culture as we know it today originate from the WEST INDIES & JAMAICAN REGGAE
As people above have said
Kool Herc - on of the originators
Was DJing in JA long before he reached NYC
There is also a correlation between immigration from the Islands and the Rise of Reggae in the USa - and the DJ / Soundlcash / Bass & MC culture - that was going strong in Jamaica from the early 60s onwards & you can hear that difference in inflection in delivery that influenced rappers like Rakim.
There was a wave of West Indian Immigrants moving to NYC, Miami and other major USA Cities in the late 70s and 80s - along with them came the rise and awareness of Reggae music in the USA and that music influenced many musics inc Hip Hop.
rewinds, dubs, MCing or 'toasting' over records, Soundsystem competitions all originated in Jamaica.
Of course the USA - got their spokenword & DJ culture:
Last Poets
Gil Scott Heron
James Brown
Louie Jordan
Disco DJing (BPMs etc)
But...
IMO - u cant deny the impact West Indian music has had on Hip Hop and Rap
more West Indian Connections are:
Slick Rick
Young MC
also
Malcomn X's family orignated in Greneda.
Marcus Garvey was also West Indian
To be honest - this generation of rappers (USA and UK) flow does little for me - the Dancehall MCs have got more flow and skill than these mainstream mediocre rappers we see on Bet and MTV I even prefer the DnB MCs flow.
