Roots of Hip Hop - "Hip Hop is close to thirty years old..." plus tracklisting
Hip Hop is close to thirty years old. We say 'close' because it's nigh on impossible to pin-point the exact moment where the genre sprang into life. Listen to Rufus Thomas' Itch and Scratch from 1970, and you'll swear yu can hear the sounds of nascent scratching. In fact, the Fatback Band's 'King Tim (Personality Jock)' - released in mid-'79 as the b-side to 'You're My Candy Sweet' - is widely acknowleged as the first commercially available fully formed rap track. Gandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's 'Adventures On The Wheels Of Steel' followed a few months later. The posse's third single, it was thefirst rap recordd to feature multiple samples (Blondie, Queen and Chic breaks among others) and to showcase Flash's unique scratching skills. Flash and The Furious Five's legacy is considerable, inspirting contemporaries like the Funky Four Plus One to new heights as well as impacting on everyone from The Clash through to almost every rap artist who has followed in the wake of that track. The records which inspired hip hop pioneers like Flash, Afrika Bambaata, Jazzy Jay and Kool Herc are a stew of R&B (check out Lee Dorsey's superlative New Orleans groove), funk (Parliament through to The JBs and on to James Brown) and rock (Blood, Sweat And Tears, anyone?).
