i find it funny that the democratic party is never described as the party of racism when they were the party of the kkk...the only ones to pass through segregation laws and the republican party voted in larger numbers for the passing of civil rights....nixon passed affirmative action when we were supposed to be racists for the so called souther strategy and the republican party didn't carry the whole south until 1980 when the majority of the country voted for the republican party...was the majority of the country racist???
oh and fdr basically put asians in concentration camps but he's the liberals hero...you gotta love the hypocrisy
The Southern Strategy started with Reagan, not Nixon. Atwater and other Republicans have admitted the Southern Strategy deliberately used anti-black racism to gain white votes. No matter how much you try and shift the focus of this discussion, the truth remains...The Republicans turned racism into an official campaign strategy and even went so far as to publicly admit it.

no the southern strategy was started with nixon( and he didn't even win the south a former democrat did george wallace)...and the guys who apologized for the southern strategy weren't around to even know what it was about...it was a comlex strategy used to gain votes...to try to simplify it into just catering to racists would have resulted in failure since that group is a small minority fringe group...the republican policies were race neutral as opposed to the democrats who catered to minorities and involved class warfare...its only a coincidence that the racists are going to support the race neutral party as opposed to the party that they consider their enemies
states rights goes back to the founding fathers and so does small government...
and the republican party has never passed any racist legislation something the democrats have....
whether or not you think a strategy involved catering to the southern region to gain votes is racist you would then have to claim that the whole country in 1980 was racist when it was practically almost 2 decades after the civil rights debate since the whole damn country voted for ronald reagan

It didn't cater to racists, it catered to the entire white electorate by turning them into racists and exploiting the current racial tensions. By the way, it was racist, hands down. Even your heroes have admitted it and tried to apologize for it.
"From now on, the Republicans are never going to get more than 10 to 20 percent of the Negro vote and they don't need any more than that... but Republicans would be shortsighted if they weakened enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. The more Negroes who register as Democrats in the South, the sooner the Negrophobe whites will quit the Democrats and become Republicans. That's where the votes are. Without that prodding from the blacks, the whites will backslide into their old comfortable arrangement with the local Democrats."- Ken Philips, Nixon's campaign strategist, in 1970
"Republicans gave up on winning the African American vote, looking the other way or trying to benefit politically from racial polarization. I am here today as the Republican chairman to tell you we were wrong.""- RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman in 2005

So does slavery and racism... Besides, most of the "states' rights" issues Nixon supported were about integration and the end of segregation. In other words, they were all about states' rights to decide whether or not to stop being racist. Republicans wanted states to have the right to decide that, which is in itself racist and wrong.

It was racist. Read the quotes above and educate yourself.

ken melhman was not even born when the southern strategy was thought of...and
i go look up this phillips character only to find out he is no longer a republican and has an axe to grind with them...hmmm and he wasn't the guy who invented either...
nonetheless no policy or legislation under a republican has been racist so and if there is one thing we learned in the hillary obama fiasco there are a ton more racist democrats and the republican party principles are not racist at all...
you cannot compare actual legislation and racist laws democrats passed to a strategy used to garner as many votes as possible...
ken melhman was not even born when the southern strategy was thought of...and
Yeah, and yet the Republicans still made him apologize for it, because everyone knew how racist it was and it was making the party look bad.

Who cares what he is now? Back when the Southern Strategy was being used, Philips was Nixon's campaign strategist, and was the major player in popularizing it as a term. So not only was it racist, it was invented by Republicans. That's a fact you can't change, Sly.

Now you're just copping pleas. Everyone knows there are racist Democrats. Stop whining and accept the racism of the Republican party's Southern Strategy.

do you consider the whole country in the 1980's racist??? name me one racist law that the republicans ever passed...
i'm not fully convinced that the southern strategy's intent was just to cater to racists...its definitely more complicated than that
in much the same way code pink thought obama would take out troops and destroy all of our national defense...everybody knew obama would not do that but he might have gave those followers hope he would pass that type of legislation
at worst the racists were a kook fringe that a strategist or two might have tried to garner votes from but it does not signify the party platform or the core beliefs of the party...
and nixon wasn't a conservative either he was a big government republican

I've given you direct quotes. Obviously your mind is clouded by bias, and there's no way you'll ever accept the truth. I could give you hundreds of quotes from Nixon, Reagan, etc. and you still wouldn't believe it because you don't want to.

DEMOCRATS: Created Jim Crow Laws
REPUBLICANS: Abolished Jim Crow Laws
DEMOCRATS: Voted barely 50% to pass Civil Rights Act of 1964
REPUBLICANS: Voted over 80% to pass Civil Rights Act of 1964
DEMOCRATS: Continue enslavement via the narcotic welfare plantation for votes
REPUBLICANS: Color blind and judge people by individual merit and effort.
The Democratic Party has a horrific history and continue
that record even today. "
"The southern strategy was based on a legitimate dislike of forced school busing, high crime, runaway welfare state and affirmative action (quotas). Just because the KKK also complains about those things dos not make all souterners racist.
What on earth is racist about being opposed to the atrocity called forced busing? The liberals cannot answer that question. Instead they try to mind read southern voters and assume they are racist. They see evidence of racism where there is none.
It is a vile, despicable act to accuse someone of racism without proof."
"In 1863, Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.
In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt bought them back. "
"Liberals call Nixon's original "southern strategy" - courting typical democrat southern strongholds in the 60's rascist because Nixon and the GOP appealed to their bigotry. That is a total lie. Basically, Nixon appealed to southern family values after the hippie, hate-America, hard left took over democrat party in 1968.
So over a period of time, these southern family value type voters gravitated to the GOP. The democrap party routinely runs on San Francisco values, anti-family, hate Christians, gays, anti-guns, high taxes and it just did not sit well with southerners who live the opposite.
Recently, the democrat party has gotten away with faking like they have conservative values, but they don't. "
No one is debating how racist Democrats are and have been. All your evidence towards that is irrelevant here, because every intelligent person knows it already.
I gave you direct quotes from Republican campaign strategists and officials admitting that the Southern Strategy was racist, from Philips, the same man who invented the term and used it to try and help Nixon win. There are also the direct quotes from Atwater, Reagan's campaign strategist and adviser that were posted earlier in the thread. You give me random conjecture from Conservative posters on a website. Sorry Sly, my evidence is obviously far stronger, and straight from the horse's mouth.
Face it, man...The Republican's Southern Strategy was deliberately racist.

Phillips doesn't seem to be the most credible guy considering he was never truly a conservative...its not like he believed in conservative values...he just saw an oppurtunity to capitalize...its unfair to paint conservative values and conservatives as racist
and like before Melham wasn't around during that time he easily could have been brainwashed by the over simplified generalization of the southern strategy that the media and race hustlers created

No one is painting Conservative values as racist; this is about the Republican party, who were racist. The fact is that Philips ran Nixon's campaign, admitting that he used racism to try and help Nixon win, and the Republican party ran with it. It was an official campaign policy, approved by the party itself. The Southern Strategy and the Republican party were racist.

so if your saying conservative values are not racist...why demonize us today in 2008 for having conservative values??
you can't say the republican party or the southern strategy was racist when there were so many other issues involved ....the democratic party at the time was catering to african americans with socialism and the democratic party was not the party of values...
its a lot more complicated than that...it was of consequence that a lot of racists felt the same way as non racists in terms of individual liberty ...
your making a huge assumption when there are many different layers of situations to just say oh racists liked southern strategy...republicans created southern strategy...republicans racist...
and why isn't this same claim made with segregation and democrats?? why only republicans???

There hasn't been any "oversimplification" of the Southern Strategy moron. Phillips himself stated what the strategy entailed, and that interview (With the NY Times that Real32 quoted) was done DURING the time when he was still heading the Nixon campaign for fukks sake.
Why don't you just admit the Republican Party's Southern Strategy was about enflaming racist whites and keep it moving? Everyone here, Democrat and non-Democrat alike, has readily admitted that Democrats were once the primary party for the racists of this country.... so why can't you just admit the obvious about the Southern Strategy? Do you really have the Republican party's dyck shoved that far down your throat? For real, you're one of the most pathetic partisan h@cks I've ever encountered on any web site. Shyts disgusting.
