it goes beyond that, IT'S POLITICS MY FRIEND
Frankie didn't have that "attitude" till Rev. Calvin Butts and the campaign against Gangsta Rap was gaining national publicity..as i said before Frankie was always worried about "IMAGE"..this is the same nicca who use to promote WBLS as a disco friendly station by showing up at STUDIO 57 on a white horse with a fur coat on...nicca was on some other ish
do you realize that it was Frankie Crocker who gave Mr. Magic his first commercial radio gig at WBLS?? because Frankie had a niece who was a big fan of Magic's radio show on WHBI cause his style was so similiar to Mr. Magic with his hip jive talking personality
Frankie put him on, and basically USED Mr. Magic , sure WBLS had the game on lock when it came to R&B but if it wasn't for Magic coming on board at the right time during the golden era of hip hop, then WBLS would have surely suffered greatly by ignoring such a powerful youth movement as Hip Hop.
Especially considring how KISS FM already was becoming a force in the dance market and was breaking into hip hop via the freestyle mixing of the Latin Rascals and Shep Pettibone which eventually led to the legendary Red Alert Show.
But Frank used Magic like a hoe on the Times Square strack during it's hey day.
Fired him for alleged "drug use" , gave Marley his shot at hosting with the IN CONTROL show , but it was obvious THIS SHOW WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, i kind of knew the writing was on the wall...in spite of the fact that Marley Marl had already established himself as a superproducer via LL COOL J, BIG DADDY KANE and the numerous remixes he did for various acts
What i heard from people who were familiar with Frankie like my parents was that he had gone thru some "religious experience" in los angelas and came back with an anti-rap mentality..then he jumped to Kiss Fm when they were trying to go Adult Urban Contemporary...while WBLS attempted to get back into hip hop with The Chuck Chillout Show featuring Funkmaster Flex which was a damn good show as well!
But they couldn't compete with Red Alert's show which was still going strong on KISS FM
Then they got rid of chuck and flex, and went with that wack ass Operating Room with fatboy Dr. Dre and Ed Lover..
they went thru so many changes you could tell WBLS was uncommited to Hip Hop, so when they eventually just got rid of rap due to mounting political pressure it wasn't a suprise at all and wasn't much of a loss , because by that time HOT 97 had already became a force....
