i remember riding to jones beach back in the day for the greek fest, listening to this now historical battle between jigga and Big L on my cuzin's mixtape, and hearing my older fam argue about who won the battle...pretty much everyone but a few agreed that L got him, he was just too deadly with the sneaky punchlines...thats also where cassidy got his whole steeze from...
anyways, it was always a good debate..so take a listen, and yall decide...lets talk about some real hiphop for once...

L was way too advanced for Jay at this stage. Jay was a rookie

If Big L never died jay-z woulnt be as big as he is, L had better flows and lyrics. No comparison, Big L would be top 5 dead or alive. And yes he made street struck which directly gave good advice to kids.

Hell, if B.I.G. wouldn't have died, Jay wouldn't have been as large...it was hard for Jay to get outta B.I.G.'s shadow...damn...listening to this battle, Jay was really not in Big L's leauge, lol...

What type of dumb shyt is this? Big L died in 99, Jay been left him in the dust by 98 and was about to sign L to Rocafella in 99, do you really not know your history or are you just an alias that spews nonsense, which would also explain the Prodigy avi.

Big L was startin to blow up, X didnt drop its dark until 99 and most people on here would agree he was bigger then jay-z until the crack caught up with him, who cares if jay was gonna sign L. Its clear who the better rapper was and Big L's style was similar to jays but better, no doubt about it in my mind he woulda left and started his own label.

Theres alot of kids here just to f*ck around and mispell names, it was funny at first when I noticed nas can be spelled at least 10 different ways but theres so many haters on here. Most of them are still hurt from ether, one idiot on here wants to have a takeover and superugly day, jay-z himself knows he lost that battle, the tears he cried after are proof. Im not sure why they still tryin to debate it and why they still catchin feelings.

Wow, I'm starting to see the level of hiphop head I'm dealing with here:
First of all "it's dark..." dropped in 98, not late 98 either, which is why he was big enough for Jay to let DMX be a supporting act for him on the "Hard Knock Life Tour" in 99, sure X blew up to be a huge star in his own right, theres a lot of them that blow up but apparently none of them last as long.
Secondly, you should care that Jay was gonna sign L, since you are the one who claimed "If Big L never died jay-z woulnt be as big as he is", all the while not knowledgable in their history to know that Jay was already big while L was still alive, big enough to sign him, you basically pulled your own card here.
Lastly, music is subjective, it's fine that you think L was "clearly" better, but you sound like an idiot talking about what "woulda, coulda, shoulda" happened had L not been killed, stick to real life son, we can only see what happened, not your psychic visions.

i know what you're saying, but there was still tension at the time between these two, believe it or not L was already known as a deadly MC, it was Jay who was still gaining fame, him holding it down on the same track with L was a big deal..
And rappers always throw jabs at each other without saying it, Big Pun and KRS were battling on that D.I.T.C. album on the song featuring them, but it wasn't "officially" a battle...unless they in the same exact crew, expect for any MC to throw a dart at the opposing MC on the same song...thats just how it goes...

Im just statin my opinion, I have no facts to back anything up but I also think if Mase got better production on his 2nd album he coulda prevented jay-z from becomin as big as he is, but you rite son all i can do is speculate. I have no facts but at isnt that whats involved in most arguements on here? Theres alotta ifs, but I dont think what i said about Big L bein better then jay is an if. There werent too many on L's level, his style was marketable to street and commercial fans just like hov. Does anyone know how well the Big Picture sold?

Not true, they were always cool with each other, furthermore, L was a known MC, but he was still up and coming which is why he was putting work in on a college radio staion, it was not a big deal to be on a small radio station with L.
And I know cats throw shots at each other all the time, but Jay even shouted out L on that track, and you can't go revising history calling shyt battles when they were clearly not, you gotta understand there are some cats on this site that don't know their hiphop, like that other cat I'm debating, who will go running to school tomorrow talking about "Big L served Jay in a historical battle!", we gotta be more responsible with the history of this hip hop game.

Hes overrated but I still cant deny the fact that hes made alot of good music and that in my opinion his first 2 were classics. I think he gets too much credit from his fans, if all these things didnt fall into place i can only speculate he woulnt be this big but I cant provide no proof. Its just my personal opinion.

misconception, how in the fucck was jay in big's shadow? yall act like jay was big's memphis bleek or some sh1t, nowhere near the case, jay was already seasoned in the rap game before big ever blew, out of all the great brooklynites of that era, big was the very last emcee to officially pick up a mic
jay's official debut came out in june 96, biggie died march 97, there wasn't even a full fuccking year, between jay's debut, and biggie's death...how in the fucck was he in his shadow? jay was a better lyricist than big, then, the only thing big had over jay was delivery and puffy for production, and he certainly wasn't his mentor
jay was known locally for opening up for BDK and sh1t, if anything big prolly looked up to that n1gga, big said himself that jay was one of the only emcees that made him nervous
If Big L never died jay-z woulnt be as big as he is, L had better flows and lyrics. No comparison, Big L would be top 5 dead or alive. And yes he made street struck which directly gave good advice to kids.
you can't unscramble eggs you idiot, you do realize that even before L's death, jay had dropped a CAREER MAKING single with hard knock life, and was at the PINNACLE of his popularity, selling like 5x plat with VOL.2...you mean to tell me, that Big L could have erased or in any way neutralized that kind of momentum? get off the drugs, L was still alive and well at that point, and was still a relatively obscure artist
and skill wise, L was dope....very dope, but yall act as if he wasn't a "punchline" rapper, a very versatile one who could do more than just that, but that was his main focus (think joe budden to an extent)...he was on some lord finesse sh1t, and he was nice with it, but nothing he was doing back then was absolutely trumping any other emcee worth his salt in that era
and RD> lifestyles
so...you have a n1gga, who dropped a solo in 95 BEFORE jay, who still was pretty below the radar in 98-99, while jay, was selling the most records he ever sold...yea, L was really cutting into that n1ggas action:thumbsdow:dry:
Big L was startin to blow up, X didnt drop its dark until 99 and most people on here would agree he was bigger then jay-z until the crack caught up with him, who cares if jay was gonna sign L. X had a nice 2-3 album run, but lets be honest here, i give him mad props for being like the first artist since biggie to come out the gate HOT like that...that was a feat, but he was a fresh artist, and while the music was certainly speaking for itself, he also got some heavy co-signs from established artists, ie. jay, LL, puffy ect...
and after 2 albums, that sh1t fizzled like a soda, not to mention the whole "east coast rivival" movement that was crackin, thats another reason he got major push, jay was trying to blow up while death row still had the ball
and even at the height of that run, jay was still the headliner out of the two, had he laid off the pipe, he could have some kind of equal footing, but crack is a hell of a drug so...
he crapped upon him on more than one occasion
he was a better all around lyricist
the only thing he lacked, was a masterpiece
up until he died, he was sh*tting on Jay from all angles
RIP

The problem is me tryin to argue that biggie woulda held jay back is the same as you sayin jay-z woulda still been what he is. All we can do is speculate that, but i still think jay would be successful but not as successful
i never speculated as to whether jay would have gotten as big as it did, all that i know is that dumb n1ggas on this board act as if jay-z was up under big's wing or some sh1t and thats not the case, you got crack babies acting as if jay-z didn't exist until biggie put him in one of his videos
I dont think jay was lyrically on bigs level, that should be a poll question. Ready2Die>>>any jay-z cd
i agree with RTD > most, if not any jay CD, but as i said, one of the main differences between jay and big, was biggie had puffy which came along with EXCELLENT production (something that RD wasn't all that big on) and arrangement...puffy KNEW HOW TO MANAGE ALBUMS, jay was doing his own thing, i'd much rather be getting input from puffy than dame if i'm trying to make a classic album
and lyrically, in my opinion biggie was above average, nothing more, his delivery is probably top 3 of all time tho, which gave him the edge, jay had a shrill ass girl voice almost, other than that, jay was a better spitter THEN
and even if you don't agree with me...bigs own words indicate that biggie thought jay was nice enough to get nervous over, that would at the least make them equals
We'll never know if Big L could have neutralized jays momentum, in my opinion yes but as you pointed out im biased so why you even arguin with me? Stop downplayin big L's greatness, callin him a better joe budden/lord finesse.
RD=Lifestyles
what i'm saying is...your theory/opinion really lacks support, mine does, L came out before jay...and around the time L died, he was still under the radar and was still trying to get mainstream recognition
and LMAO@ downplaying the greatness of big L...n1gga please, dude was ill and everything but what exactly is off about my budden/finesse comparison? all 3 emcees are great in their own right
Lifestylez wasnt a commercial album, with the big picture L started movin in a more commercial direction. I dont know how many albums L sold with the big picture, but he wasnt about to be no cannibus. I believe he was on the verge of blowin up, again theres no proof either way.
RD wasn't commercial either, and i never said he'd be canibus or even that he WOULDN'T have blown up, i just don't see how him blowing up..especially under the umbrella of rocafella (and then n1ggas would be saying L was in jay's shadow or took his style from him) enough to negate what jay's momentum was like at the time
You came with the facts, I cant prove them wrong but I can have my opinion. I mite be biased against jay-z but you seem to be a real big jay-z fan, which means you obviously biased towards him.
a big fan, yes, biased, no, just realistic and when i have an opinion on something, i make sure it's rooted in reality before i go running off at the mouth, at least you admit that i came with some facts, but when you look at those facts, your opinion looks like wishful thinking
I saw someone post on here that X sold more then jay with his first 2 albums, and x was definitly bigger then jay.
like i said, during that run, who was the headliner of tours between the two? DMX was fresh product coming right on the heels of an east coast resurgence, jay was trying to blow up while death row still had the ball, by the time X came around the attention was already back on the east
Sunzoo aka LC
03-16-08, 09:45 PM
oh...perfect example of this bullsh1t by the way would be 50 cent
love him or hate him...how huge is 50 cent? how big did he become from what he started as? matter of fact...ain't 50 and big L get shot in the same year? lets examine that
50 cent is already a top 10 selling artist of all time, jay is top 3 as far as rap goes, in 99, 50 had about as much weight/stock as Big L did correct? so....we have a hypothetical situation of Big L somehow preventing jay-z from becoming as big of a figure as he was, just by not dying
yet 50 cent...gets shot the same year, at around the same status in NY hip hop but actually lives...and blows up in a MAJOR way, somehow without negating jay-z success/status in any way
do you believe in your heart of hearts, that big L could have blown up to the level of 50 cent? and even if he did, would it have changed any fuccking thing?
i mean if you're that big of a big L fan, and it makes you feel better, to act as if he lived, that he'd somehow made jay less important then by all means go right ahead, but you'd be kidding yourself of course

50 cent is already a top 10 selling artist of all time, jay is top 3 as far as rap goes, in 99, 50 had about as much weight/stock as Big L did correct?
By saying correct it makes it sound like even you dont believe that.

nah just making sure you following me, the buzz for how 2 rob > whatever big L was doing at that point in time
so status wise, they were either on equal footing or 50 had a slightly bigger buzz...either way, 50's tremendous success, even in direct competition with jay, didn't lessen jay's popularity, so even if L accomplished the feat of becoming a superstar (and he was really kinda RAW to be THAT big of a commercial draw) there is still nothing that indicates that jay would somehow be stifled by his presence

Big L had a bigger buzz, he had a video, maybe even 2 that played on BET. I dont think 50 had a video out for how 2 rob.

His album debuted at #2 on the charts in 2000, what was was 50 doin then? He released Power of the Dollar which is considered an unofficial album. IN 2002 was when he started to blow, 2 years later.

gotta agree with that, Big L was already well known in the game for his own work and for being part of a legendary crew, while 50 cent IMO at that time was a one-hit wonder who tried to use a beef gimmick to blow up, turned out I was right but who knew it would be so successful and lucrative for 50.

Jay-Z of course.
who's the other guy  ?

I have no idea when that came out but I don't think it's relevant, we're not talking buzz here, my opinion is in response to the post that said "50 had about as much weight/stock as Big L did correct?", and I seriously disagree, 50 might have had a good up and coming buzz, but Big L was already well known and respected.
