Comparing careers...seriously, what puts BIG above Em on everyone's list? BIG has one classic, which is clearly above any Em release, but it could be argued that SSLP, MMLP, and even TES are at least equal to Life After Death, so it's not like BIG's catalog is much better than Em, given he has 1 classic, and 1 great album while Em has 3 great albums. Encore brings it down a bit though, but still, it's close.
Skillwise, Em is lyrically superior and it's really not close. BIG's subject matter isn't even better either, how many times he talked about robbing people and killing people is ridiculous. He was sick with it no question, but just like Em is sick with his subject matter. Neither Em or BIG are very strong in this area (of course there are exceptions) so it's a wash there. Storytelling, BIG may be GOAT there but Em is underrated in this area, Guilty Conscience and Stan are lyrically brilliant for storytelling tracks, plus he's got so many others. I'll give BIG a slight edge for storytelling, but it's not enough to put him over the top. Flow wise and delivery wise, they are two of the strongest ever in that area, and it's close. I gotta say BIG has the best delivery of all time, but Em is up there too. Flow wise, I can't tell who's better, both are top notch. So I really don't get why BIG is on most people's top 10, and if Em is put in a top 10 you just get laughed at. If you think about it Em should get as much respect if you look at his catalog and skills.

For the same reason that it's the universal opinion that the sky is blue and the grass is green.

I think it has alot to do with the fact that more people like bigs flow then ems. Specially MMLP alot of ppl didnt like what he was rappin about, While bigs songs could be lyrically repescted and bumped in the club(Remind me of YOUNG DRO) I personally like more of eminems shyt but biggies songs flow so well it hard not to like him.

So is Big > Em.
It's a sad day for the public school education in America when some one has graduated and still can't determine the difference between a fact and an opinion.

Certain things are just fact, opinion doesn't enter the equation.
Hitler was evil, Whitney Houston is a better singer than Britney Spears and Biggie > Em.

They are both my all time favorite MC's.
So, I will not pick.
They have distinctive different styles, and they're both amazing entertainers.
I can't pick.
They are both #1 on my list.

who in the fucck said that was a universal opinion? biggie and em are both top 15, but i prefer em as far as standing goes, even tho he has no album in his catalog better than ready to die, his overall skill set and song writing repertoire gives him a good shot at an either/or situation

back in the thread where people listed their top 10, mine had both big and em, and someone quoted me, bolded em and put a  ...and now we got mitchandness and the abstract excusing em, laughing him off just like i said, saying big>em is a fact, when they have no reason...still waiting on that explanation

Have ya ever been to a party or club and everybody was on the floor dancing to Em?
Me neither.
Sometimes it ain't about who can rap the best . Sometimes it is about who can get the crowd hyped. Em can't do that.

You've clearly never been to a Eminem concert before. He's one of the best live rappers out.

common > biggie...how often do you see n1ggas in the club dancing to common?
dancability means abosolute sh1t in the grand scheme of things, different artists are for different situations, and if you're talking about getting crowds hype, like actual concert crowds, you're sadly mistaken about em being able to move a crowd
if you're talking about a bunch of teenagers at a house party, who cares?
if that is what were going off of, MC hammers' lets get it started, is the greatest album ever

The grand scheme of things is about musical replay. Biggies sh!t was getting much love throughout radio, clubs and parties. Eminem is considered boring in place like down south,Texas and hoods of Cali. Nobody is gonna sit there and listen to a dude crying about his failed relationships. It just does not have the head nod factor. It ain't hot. Eminem is cool to listen to around the house or in your ipod, but Biggie is the dude you wanna listen to when you want to be around a bunch of people and having a good time. I'm not going to take this little debate to a black and white issue, but in reality, most blacks ain't riding around listening to Em. The beats don't hit and the subject matter is kinda corny to us.
I know, I know, you want to say what I just typed has nothing to do with the quality of the MC. In reality I think it does. We tend to get caught up at being all critical of another rappers skill or lack of, but we should focus more on the overall package. Both are superior rappers, but biggies overall music is just better. The average fan does not trip off of a mc's ability to have intricate rhymes and crazy metaphors, sometime they just want "feel good music". Why do you think the South and at one time the West was so successful?
BTW, Hammer sold a gang of albums. Lyrically it was comical, but the public don't really trip off of sh!t like that. They want to be able to have fun with their music.

see you're relating overall status to who rides around to what...how many n1ggas from the hood do you know ride around listening to common?? is talib kweli real big in the south? who gives a sh1t, different rappers serve different purposes
the hood, in general has a gang of rappers, black or white that they in large don't fucck with content wise, that doesn't somehow strip said person of their talent and or standing, it just means that said artist is not a staple there, you mean to tell me young jeezy > common, just because he gets more love in the club? thats not how this sh1t works doggie, at least not for me
moving the clubs, is a part of versatility and should be taken into account, but i really don't think it's the deciding factor as to who's better than who because then you take into consideration cats like mc hammer had clubs on lock...now i'd be lying if i said i ain't do the type writer when i was young, but i knew the difference between a spitter and an entertainer
puffy being able to move a club more than say a m-1/stick man does not automatically mean he's superior

Are we beefing? Why did this get moved?
The question of the thread is "Why is it universal opinion BIG>>>.>Em" Are we debating the better MC or who's music is more liked? It is a lot of peoples opinion that Biggie has more hits. Can't deny that fact (if we are talking about music). If we are talking about skill, IMO it all depends on what you like about a particular MC. Biggie was easy to understand, had a good voice, memorable stories and a good since of humor. He had the phors and different style flows.
Eminem had all of that too (though I personally can't stand his voice). Like I stated before it all comes down to replay value & subject matter. Biggies rhymes with Puffy's producers were a good combo at the time. Eminem beats, voice and personal issues on wax kinda take away from his overall package which leads to no replay value IMO. You walk away saying, Damn this kid can rap his ass off but it's nothing you want to hear over and over again. There is a reason why Em's catalog is always questioned as having true classics. And I haven't heard anyone say that Biggies first two albums were not classic. Different strokes for different folks.
:laugh: damn, I high as hell. I now just realized you got a Eminem avy. I can't win this debate no matter what I say.:laugh:

yeah mods moving this to beef zone, whats up with that were just talking about whos a better rapper
and i disagree about LAD being classic. There is filler, and a little to much of it for classic status. I also have no problem with Em's voice but I know what you're talking about with replay value. I do think SSLP has a ton of replay value though.

no beef here, and i'll be the first to tell you that the reason em is not in my top 10, is because he does not have a bonifide classic, i'm not a dilusional stan, don't let the AV fool you, just because he's one of my favs don't mean i'm unrealistic
but if you really want to get into semantics, biggies main weekness...even if it's no fault of his own, also relates back to his catalog, not enough to judge as to whether he could maintain that level of quality, now, when it comes to my personal criteria for emcee placement, em could very well rack up more than enough to put him over biggie
one of the things that i feel could put em over big is versatility/subject matter, in that respect big was pretty one dimensional, even if he didn't get the chance to really amass much material
even tho the kim/mom/hallie angle has been played a bit too much (well...when you spit about your real life, it's bound to happen), if you've really heard most of em's material, you can't deny that he has a wide range of topics and types of songs that he's done, if there is anything that could break that "tie" for me, that would be it
