How was the West won in the early 90s? Melodies. And not just some ol bullshyt melody placed oddly in a song. The west coast producers knew how to incorporate melodies that enhanced a song and took it beyond the kick and the snare.
Even Rakim had a song called 'check out my melody,' which was so boom, bap, if it had been the blueprint for what good melody is or was, the game woulda been ****ked up! NY producers in the 80s were actually better at incoporating melody i.e Marley Marl, but the West just put the game on smash.
NY still bucked after Cube, Death Row and Quik were moving consistent units, and called itself keeping it real. Keep it real, nicca!
Then the midwest got hip, and did their own variation. Meanwhile the south was honing its sound, with many groups using live instrumentation during their recording with session players. That birthed the early south sound that took us to prominence and morphed into what you have today. It's the melody.
Meanwhile, NY stays losing, and looks outside of its region for hitmakers.
