A funkier, indier Arctic Monkeys with intelligent lyrics? (but not better!!)

Discuss!

I don't know about "funkier" or "indier" but they are a better band.

I found out about them like last week from one of you guys. D/Led some album you posted, but only heard it once. So far I like Artic Monkeys better.

Vampire Weekend is dope. It's crazy how popular they're getting, so quickly. Cover of Spin and sh1t already. Fukkin press latches on to these type of bands all the time and then the hype settles down and they're left in the dust. Nevertheless, they made a great album and it's really just about the music when it comes down to it.

VW is in no way better than the Arctic Monkeys. I love both bands, but come on man...

What do you think is better about the Arctic Monkeys?

I like their energy better than VW. It's funner, dancier, and dirtier -kind of a more accessible Libertines if you will, or uh, to compare to a NY Band, The Strokes, who've been compared to VW.

I think Alex Turner is a better frontman/lyricist than Ezra Koenig with more to say, not to get into the whole aristocrat/Ivy League thing about VW, but their album is basically about Columbia University and Capecod - what's next? Gentrfication in Manhattan???

I think Arctic Monkeys had more hype than VW and actually improved on their second album. Hey, I love both bands. I haven't seen the Arctic Monkeys live yet. I saw VW live, they were pretty effin good, but then again on SNL this weekend they were bland and boring, which was quite weird.

Whatever happened to that Tv for the Radio band or whatever they were called.

Watching them on SNL me made less of a fan. I like their music but I want to punch them all in the face multiple times.

Vampire Weekend are already better than The Strokes. Reducing the record to Columbia and Capecod is lazy and silly in my opinion. Folks are getting too caught up in the bands back story. The next record could be about the drummer getting ran over--no one really knows. It'd be like saying Arctic Monkeys' album is only about being a drunk teenager or whatever. I'm not too keen on the idea of using SNL as the barometer of a bands abilities.

Whatever happened to that Tv for the Radio band or whatever they were called.
Two certified classics. Arguabaly the best new band of the past 5-10 years. They're probably taking some time off and bullshiiting around. I know Dave Sitek produces for a lot of people--dude produced the whole Scarlett Johansson record.

No, you're not missing anything. The comparisons stem more from the hype both bands have received.

I wasn't reducing the record to Columbia and Cape Cod, I was talking about the content of their songs, if one's listened to Koenig's vocals and read the lyrics, it's apparent that's what the songs are about. I'd say their background significantly influences the type of music they are making, as it does with everyone, and even The Strokes are rich NY boys in the first place.

And to say that VW is already better than The Strokes is pretty laughable.
If anything, VW will go the route of the Strokes and another Detroit band will become the best American band to emerge in the last 5-10 years like perhaps The White Stripes might be (I love TV ON THE RADIO, but can't co-sign on that one).

VW are definitely better than the Artic Monkeys, and the Strokes. Seriously, i'd like to know why people like either band so much.

What's laughable about? Besides their debut all the rest of their records have been below average to average. Plus, their debut was pretty derivative.

Why Detroit? The White Stripes are basically at the point in their careers when they can put out bullshiit and everyone will fawn over it. It's pretty unwarranted in my opinion.

I must be missing something as well. I tried listening to the album twice...and after the 5th track it all starts to sound the same to me. I'd take the kills or the strokes over these guys.

SMH. The fact that their fans use words like "funner" just gave me another reason to hate the most overhyped band in British music press history (which is really saying something if you know about their hyperbolic "reviews" of albums).

Animal Collective is experimental pop dance junk critics go crazy for

*was gonna bump this with VW lyrics*

Half of the ring lies here with me
But the other half’s at the bottom of the sea....

The Animal Collective comparison is very random.

But don't listen to Peacebone, listen to Fireworks. Anyone with decent taste in music will like some part of that song.

vampire weekend is a great cd. I'm loving their whole sound and I can play this whole album a couple times a day.

animal collective on the other hand... is garbage. i seriously don't understand how people could listen to them. I couldn't even get through one song on their last cd.

ah the classic, if you don't like song A or B your musical taste is **** argument. If you think those two songs are good.. well great for you. I guess we all have different musical tastes. I on the other hand, think those two songs, as well as the rest of the cd, are garbage.
