I'm having an issue with my midi controller. Sometimes it will just randomly stop working. Then I have to turn it off, then back on. It's USB powered. It seems like it happens if I don't use it for a few minutes, then try using it again. I tried re-installing it and the problem still occurs. I don't know if it's just a bad cable or what. Anyone have any advice?

Make sure you have the most recent drivers for it.

Make sure you don't use a hub to connect the device via USB. Switch out the USB cable to rule that out as a cause. NEVER use a USB port built into the front of a tower. If this is the case switch it to the back.

Why?

1. They just flat out build them ****tier usually.

2. Lot's of times they are built directly to the mother board sharing power from the motherboard. This works fine for devices that transfer simple files like a digital camera. An audio device needs the full dedication of the USB port. For power and the transfer of Midi messages, which usually a port on the front of a tower cannot provide.

Make sure you don't have older versions of driver's on your computer either. Maybe uninstall everything and start over. Also check to see if there is a firmware upgrade on the actual device from the manufacturer.

Make sure it's configured correct with w/e OS you're using. What kind of controller is it and what OS are you using?

Sorry to sound so robotic I just answer this question 20 times a day at work lol so I figured I'd chime in for you.

Thanks man. I've been plugging it into the front of the tower, so that's probably it. I've never had a problem until recently, so I'll try switching it to the back and see if that helps.

if that doesnt work try a program named Midi Ox, free dl. Which accepts all midi inputs and displays the actual midi messages being sent. If you move different keys, pads, knobs or faders on you're controller each message will show on the screen here, if you get nothing obviously midi is not being sent, maybe something is wrong with the controller.
