seriously.

every single time im listening to music at a comfortable level on itunes... then a song from that album comes on, i have to drop whatever im doing, run across the room and turn down the speakers.

i have my equalizer presents set so the bass is pretty good, and that album just f*cks everything up... the bass line is distorted its so loud.

the whole album is just way too LOUD.

smh at dig a hole almost blowing out my speakers :thumbsdow

Nah man I'll take loud over too low any day because you can control it, my vote for worst would be Jeru's "Sun Rises in the East", the levels are so low you can't really bump that shyt like you should without distorting the sound, I always said they should reissue that shyt.

I made the same exact threat after the album first came out. The **** got squashed in the limiter. No transients lol

I thought Timbo's album was bad but AG really raised the bar for ****ty mastering.

P.S Dre didnt master the album lol

Its not the ME's fault. He delivered what he was asked to. Stupid loudness wars!

It has nothing to do with speakers. Its the mastering period. The master is terrible. No headroom at all, no transients. Waveform looks like a bar lol

Blame Tony Dawsey, he mastered it.

Wrong, but that is the mentality of many retards today, hence the shocking quality of many albums.

i think i remember this thread, and i didn't have the retail, and neither did you at the time...well if i remember right.

i haven't heard the retail,.....the actual store bought album, so i can't comment.

but based on the rips, for the album...it would be some of the worst of last year and worst for a high profile artist in a minute.

especially considering the album, could have been leaked before it was manufactured at its highest optimal levels.

Enta da Stage too. And somebody mentioned The Sun Rises in the East, I agree. Brooklyn Took It is way quieter than D. Original, soon as it comes on you gotta turn it way up. I never thought anything was wrong w/KC mastering, except the volume's kinda high, especially Dig a Hole, but the quality is very good.

Guess who mastered Fishscale lol

Is not The mastering engineers fault exactly though. He just delivers what the customer wants. Tony D. has mastered some classics so I know its not his skill set.

I'm mad because the Bills and the Knicks are single handedly managing to simoultaneously drive down the quality of both of their respective sports...

sound level high > sound level low

and this just isnt true... any album that you think is too low, you can take into basically acid pro, spend 20 minutes with the levels and have it sounding decent.

theres no bringing an album back from all the distortion and sh*t that comes from it being pressed in the red like kingdom come. :gag: great album too, its a shame.

Its not the mastering, its the fact that Dre mixed every song on the album. Dre mixes his joints to the level where it damn near clips, but it doesn't. It's not distorted on my ****, but it is louder than most of my other cds. If u check anything that Dre mixes, its loud as ****, but crisp.

Maybe Tony Dawsey isn't used to mastering **** thats mixed like that. He mastered the Black Album and that **** sounds great.

Most people don't have the slightest idea what mastering loud means and what it does to the quality of sound.
Besides that most people have mediocre sound systems, so they don't notice what's wrong.

Kingdom Come is disgustingly loud and the better sound system you have the more you'll notice the terrible mastering.

Just take a look at this waveform:
http://files.myopera.com/ermi/files/jay-z-kc.png (that's from the song Kingdom come)
Doesn't need a comment if you know what that means.

kingdom come is horribly mastered. it has nothing to do with what kind of system you have. it's mixed and mastered terribly period and given the resources jay has this is unacceptable.

i mean even the engineer who mastered it went online at some engineering/production msg board before the lp came out and apologized to everyone for how it was gonna sound. he said the label just told him to make it as loud and compressed as possible that was the end of it. if i recall correctly (i can't find a link), he even said that other engineers were doing the mastering before him but refused to make it loud for the sake of being loud and were fired.

this sadly is a common occurrence in the loudness war in the industry...

You can always just turn up the volume, but you can't change the compression on a CD. The new type of mastering destroys sound quality, and in fact is usually designed for music that you dont actually listen to (like at a park or a in a mall). Buy better headphones.

It's sad how modern mastering is ruining CDs, most "remastered" editions sound much WORSE than the originals

Yeah its crazy normally anything mixed by Dre is going to sound amazing. His mixes are by far the best in hip-hop and he mixed every song on that album. Thing is though, it only really works for the songs he produced and he only produced like 4-5 songs on there. So, like somebody said in the thread earlier, the songs he did sound better than the rest that he didn't produce. He didn't master the album, but it coulda been better, I mean i'm sure his mix game is still on point so it shouldn't have been too hard to master a whole album that he mixed whether he made all the beats or not. Hell, Puff's mixes on American Gangster were damn near, if not, better.

Hey, how come nobody on sohh pointed this out? Who would've ever thought that Jay woulda made a better album with Puff than with Dr. Dre??? Thats crazy! Puff gave him his true comeback album.

The Sun Rises in the East is by far the worst ever, and not only because it is too low--so all the "loudness war" talk is irrelevant

Not only is the album so incredibly low that turning it full volume on many systems does not make it bump, but the songs are uneven so you must continually increase and decrease the volume. The worst of both worlds.

Haters? I don't think anyone in this thread is hating, really they're just talking about how KC mastering is bad, doesn't really have anything to do with Jay, because he isn't involved in the mastering process.
