Im thinking about utilizing my gyms lap pool and wanted to know if anyone else used swimming as part of their excercise routine?
Any tips or comments that could help a brother out. Also how many laps should I do to start out etc....
Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

 2 miles a day.
suggestions for a beginner like yourself ...stretch before you swim for at least 10-15 mins....make sure you have a good pair of goggles (i suggest speedo or TYR) and start out slow ...like make it goal to swim 5 laps the first time out ...and bump it up to 10 the next time. keep a bottle of water next to your lane if you need to break and take a few sips. also wear a water resistant watch and keep time. you'll see yourself getting faster(hopefully) and it'll motivate you to keep it up.
any other questions just ask...i've been swimming for years.
oh and just a lil warning....as a newbie...you will feel sore and beat the f*uk up the next day...muscles you didn't even know you HAD will be hurting. don't let it deter you ...get right back in the pool the next day. you get over it after about a week...

your average gym facility pool is gonna be your standard Jr. Olympic sized 25 meter pool (50 meters is olympic size & you'll fnd em mostly at universitys ..swimming\training specific facilities...etc)
32 laps in a 25 meter pool is roughly a metric mile...

Have you found your arms/shoulders have bulked up??
I live near the beach so swim a lot for recreation but have always been too scared to get into it too seriously.

i wouldn't call it "bulk"..that sounds too much like a body builder.
nah but i definitely have swimmers physique. the broad swimmers shoulders ....v-shaped back..and the overall "leaness" that comes with swimming daily. i'm not "skinny" but i have a healthy toned build. you won't end up looking like a top heavy Gymnastic chick by swimming a lot..if that what you're asking. haha

I've incorporated a 1/2 hour swim in the ocean 3 mornings a week and will probably do more when the weather is warmer.

I wouldn't call myself a *swimmer* per se, but I enjoy it. It's more of a leisure thing than a sport thing. If I could find a pool nearby, I'd go swimming every once in a while. Not too much, because I don't want a swimmer's body.

salt water is a beast. Good for the sinuses but damn it burns.
I used to swim on a national level, was so long ago(when I was 17... I'm 23 now and I've consumed too many beers to turn back) but the best workout is to start off with like 2000 meteres a day(on a 50 m pool thats 40 laps.... it's not that daunting because you will switch up your strokes)
do about 10 laps warm up, 2 laps of each stroke (8 laps), 12 laps of doing 3 separate drills (like kicks only, arms only, and "ketch-up" strokes) 5 laps sprint, 5 laps warm down.
Then ur good to go. It's hard as hell though, I attempted a comeback a year and a half ago... only thing I came back to was pizza and beer.

word i tried to do the swim team thing and quickly realized you gotta have MAD heart to be up at 4:30 am in a freezing pool 6 days a week while all your friends are sleeping warm in their beds.
i stopped for like a year but didn't find it that hard getting back into it. the first 2 weeks are brutal. my endurdance virtually dissappered..and every muscle was sore for about a week. after that it was fine. i've been having issues with my rotary cuffs for a bout 2 years now cos i go hard (60-70 laps a day freestlye\butterfly) ...but there's nothing i can really do about it except surgery which i wont do.

Swimming is amazing. Was also part of our off season workouts during college football.
