how do y'all feel about collaborating with another producer(s) on a track?

they're are some great teams out there, the neptunes, heatmakerz, trackmasters, organized noise and young groups like i.n.f.o. and nova, nabs and manuel, da zombeez, trackboys etc.

it seems like most of the time two or more people working on a beat can help it be more balanced and polished, like a whole process of perfecting the beat... other times it doesnt work and the beat sounds too crowded or overproduced

i like most production teams but i think it only works best when both guys would be good enough on their own

I guess it depends on how well the two can mesh their styles. I remember Timbaland and Dr. Dre were supposed to produce an album together way back when. In theory, it sounds like it would be amazing. But who knows how they would've meshed or if egos would've gotten in the way, etc. For instance, after DJ Quik & Dr. Dre worked together on "Put It On Me", I heard that Quik said he wouldn't work with Dre again cuz he's too much of perfectionist. So I guess it all depends if the chemistry is there or not.

yeah i think it all depends too because i heard a track that was co-produced by lil jon and scott storch and it was hot but then i heard somethin by lil jon and mannie fresh and the **** was garbage. timbaland and danjahandz also make a good production duo and u cant forget about the runners... we the best lol

it helps when you're beat blocked and don't know where to take the track. Sometimes someone else's ideas can take your tracks to a whole new level. Also if you're like a straight up sample head sometimes it good to partner with a more musica person to help flesh out ideas.

ya but i think it can be difficult.. me and my boy tried working together making beats and it didnt turn out good at all.. I was beat blocked and he started playin keys..sparked an idea (great) but then when i wanted to put my idea in the beat he was to busy adding the stuff that he wanted. It was hot but they beat took a change in style.. My idea didnt even fit in with what he had just added so im like well he might as well finish it his way... i think that if your workin with someone there has to be a designated lead. or it should be established what sound or vibe your trying to achieve.

The role thing is evident with kanye.. like you could say that kanye co produces with john bryan or whatever, but in this situation its like John bryant knows his role.. submit little ideas but hes really there to play keys. Or does just blaze "co produce" with an orchestra.. those japanese girls playing strings arent saying ish to him about what should be added to the beat... Its like someone plays him a sample.. he gets an idea.. has someone come play the drum sequences.. and then has someone come play piano or srtings or horns. These people know what they came to do and that makes it easy

And when you say producing a track... obviously more goes into creating a track than just making a beat.. im ill with chorus and concepts so if I can be there from the beggining and make small suggestions or maybe play a drum pattern thats good because once the beats done ill probably have the track mapped out before the artist gets there...

Two heads better than one... If people can take direction yes.. otherwise no

A lot of good posts in here.

It DEFINITELY depends on chemistry. Because producers ARE artists and artists are sensitive (I know I am). So you would have to have a really good rapport with an individual. Also, like someone said, if you got "beat block" the other person can help you advance the track to another level. I know there's like a dozen or two beats that I got that I just stopped working on because I didn't know where to go but knew it was missing something.
