for me it started with KoRn, i was still listening to hip hop, and i liked there sound, they had alittle bit of hip hop influence, it started with "got the life" cause the bass player fieldy plays with that hip hop sound, at least back then he did. so your best bet is just listen to a rock station where your from your bound to hear something you like, and go from there, or if you have satelite radio, which is the best way to go, just explore homie
Since it seems like you're just vacationing you'd probably like Korn, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, etc.

Yeah I used to listen to rap hard back in the day but I switched over..
My fav bands are
Avenged Sevenfold
Bullet For My Valentine
Atreyu
and others but see if you like those, they may be a little to heavy for the first time.

i forgot to add, listen to alot of stuff from the mid 90's thru 2003, cause alot of the music today is crappy, so def. check out stuff from the 90's
Damn I hate those bands, ALL of those bands, they just mentioned. Rock is as bad as rap.
Try Wolfmother :D

i'm a casual rock listener but rock was my main music for a few years. just like hiphop there are crap load of sub genres and you will find certain sub genres more appealing than others. check out any rock songs/artists you liked and try other artists with similar sound. but keep your ears open to different sounds as well, you can hear good music anywhere, like on TV and movies.
not to hijack this thread too much, but what are some grunge bands that ya'll would recommend? after watching that last simpsons episode + juno got me thinking that I'd never given it a try.

No offense, but ya'll listing some trash ass rock music.
Here's the rock I'd recommend for a rap fan:
Funkadelic - The best black rock group of all time. After listening to them, you'll slap the fukk outta anyone saying rock is for white folks. Get these albums: Maggot Brain, Standing on the Verge of Getting it On, Let's Take it to the Stage.
The Stooges - Proto-Punk, but they got enough groove for a black fan. Get these albums: Fun House, Raw Power
Black Sabbath - Metal, but once again, bluesy and groovy enough for niccas. Get these albums: Paranoid, Vol. 4, Self Titled
Led Zeppelin - Get Led Zeppelin I, II and IV.
David Bowie - One of the blackest white men that ever lived, in terms of music. Get these albums: Ziggy Stardust, Station to Station
Frank Zappa - The man has an enormous catalogue, but I'd start with his album, Hot Rats. Its more jazz-fusion that straight up rock, but I think you'll dig it.
Gang of Four - People think punk is an extremely white genre, but a lot of punk bands messed with African rhythms and this is one of the funkiest punk bands I've heard.
Get their album, Entertainment!
If you're open minded, you'll enjoy all these albums A LOT. I listed nothing but classics, some of these albums are the rock versions of The Infamous, Illmatic, etc. After copping these albums, you should fukk with some classic rock (Cream, Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, Beatles, etc.), or maybe some of the black indie bands doin it nowadays (TV on the Radio, Indigo-Son, Black Kids)

English motherfukker do you speak it?
"When I think of rock I think of the real **** that we go crazy to at concerts"
You mean like The Stooges...a band I mentioned? Silly ***gut, this form is for real heads.
Sh!t, how about some Talking Heads? More Songs About Buildings & Food is one of the best rock albums of the 70's. David Byrne & Brian Eno was a fukking dream team. Little Creatures is another gem. Actually, just check it all out. David Bowie's 3 album collaboration with Brian Eno, from Low (one of the best albums ever) through "Heroes" and Lodger is essential listening.
The Clash - All their albums, except for Cut The Crap. That sh!t was fukking garbage. On the topic of the Clash, Big Audio Dynamite was Mick Jones' post-Clash band and was one of the first music acts to make use of movie samples. Check out This Is Big Audio Dynamite, No. 10 Upping St & The Globe.
Gotta reinforce other dude on Maggot Brain. One Nation Under A Groove is another Funkadelic classic, but the song Maggot Brain is one of the best things you'll ever hear in your life.
Lots of good more recent rock too. Anything Mike Patton is involved in is worth a listen, even if sometimes it sucks. Angel Dust is an opus.
No offense, but ya'll listing some trash ass rock music.
Well, most hip-hop fans like trash ass rock music. Dude is probably just going through a phase so why give him anything decent when all he wants to listen to is probably Linkin Park and Nirvana.

I resent that, my dude. I like Nirvana. "Come As You Are" is a classic song IMO.

If he's just getting into rock and he doesn't want to hear anything too rockish. So, he'd be better off with Rage and stuff of that sort.
