I really like this book and I don't read shyt. I was supposed to read it for 12th grade. Never did and the book was just sitting on my dresser so I read it and it's real dope. It's something that draws you into it tho. Anybody else read this book?

what is it about? maybe i'll go check it out... It's about this kid who is obviously on his Britney Spears. But then again you can relate to him on so many levels. I can't really explain the book only to say that dude is a spokesperson for children and he hates fake folks. matter fact http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catcher_in_the_Rye that should explain it way better than me. Good Book. Top Ten Fave.
i loved that book. im gonna reread it again one of these days... Yea I might read it again soon. Have you noticed that my Username is based off of a minor character in the Book? Carlloose=Carl Luce. What was your favorite part?

That was the book that John Lennon's killer was obsessed wit and he thought he was Holden. So he went to NYC like Holden, shot John Lennon and then sat down and started reading that book waiting for the police to come.
He even said that he accidentally forgot his own copy before he got on the plane so he went to a bookstore down the blokk from Lennon's apartment to buy one. Because the book he was about to purchase was the last one on the shelf and it was made fancy, he felt it was fate telling him to kill.
He thought he was the new "catcher" and wanted to finish the book with his life story as the last chapter. He thought Lennon was trying to be Holden with his music and he got mad so he wanted to kill him.

Yea that shyt bugged me out. That's why they banned it out of schools and some libraries for a long time. But the book was to good and it resurfaced. Dude was sick tho. I mean like I said everybody can relate to Holden in some way but dude thought that he could be the new "catcher" was to stupid because killing Lennon just made him a phony because he was 1) already an adult and past the point of saving and 2) J.D. Salinger was'nt even thinking bout writing a sequel to the book.

A Catcher In the Rye is one of my favorite books. When i was forced to read it back in high school i didn't enjoy it, but when I read it later in life I loved it.

That book was garbage, waaaaaaaay to repetitive and boring.... all of his nonstop flashbacks were uninteresting and the **** he was doing was boring as well...

I'll give Salinger props for writing that **** realistic as hell, cuz it was, the first person perspective was on point it just wasnt interesting or entertaining. It didnt go over my head, just didnt vibe with me like that...

Respectable opinion. I did notice the repeating in the story but it had deeper meanings behind them so that when he did flashback you would'nt be like . Plus you have to remember that the book's main character is a fvckin psycho and it's all coming from his mind. I wonder why they never made this into a movie. It would be kinda dope.

i didnt notice that til you pointed it out but thats kewl. the reason i liked it so much was bc back in high school i read hundreds of books but there was only a few that i actually enjoyed reading bc they kept me interested thru-out the whole book. a few others were hamlet, lord of the flies, i know why the caged bird sings, things they carried and so on. its hard for me to stay focused on reading since i have a reading comprehension disability where my mind doesn't retain what i read; the only thing that helps me with that is if my interest is kept. i gotta pick this book up though again

*plans a trip to borders tomorrow*
im actually in the middle of a book rite now but it's not that interesting to go back to so i may just finish it up another time. lol

My favorite book that we all had to read in HS. Lots of symbolism about society and the avoidance of growing up etc. If your into symbolism you should love the book

My favorite part was when he was talking to his sister, explaining the title of the book and what he really wanted to be. Oh and when he met Carl Luce at the lil place to have drinks and this nygga Holden is talkin all this bull**** about fvckin hoes(reminds me of Mowgli) and never even did anything but minor kissin and Carl Luce is like . That shyt had me dyin.

Great book, I actually re-read it because of this thread eh?

It's one of those books where you read it before you can fully comprehend what is going on. You forget and dislike such "school books" because it was forced upon you. Other examples: Fahrenheit 451 and Things Fall Apart.

A classic..

Fahrenheit 451 is a great example of force fed books. I aint know what the hell was goin on when I had to read it in High School but now I love that book. Along with 1984 and I'm tryna get into A Clockworks Orange.

I'd suggest checking out Salinger's other books--although maybe not as readily digested as Catcher in the Rye. I'd argue they're better.

My favorite is probably Franny and Zooey.

Man that was an ill book... that and Catcher were both required reading in HS.

Seperate Peace was disturbing on many levels... plus it had one of those "good fvcked up" endings where you are left thinking damn... did I learn something from that or was the authors mission just to depress me?
I like when the teacher molests him, i laughed so hard in class.
:D

Well Im not sure I ever laughed as hard about it as I just did reading that... how many people gave you funny looks LOL

That book made me want to write, word up...

He has another book with some of the same characters, "Raise High The Roof Beam, Carpenters" which is also pretty good

I actually was thinking about writing cool, esoteric quotes on the wall like the characters in the story, just seemed like a pimp thing to do

Yup, also Nice Stories is also about the Glass family as well as Seymour--An Introduction, and Hapworth 16, 1924.

I'm curious as to how much stuff Salinger is just sitting on.
