I said this about "American Gangster" weeks ago.
It was an excuse for Jay to come back out doing topics he's familiar with and those that he knows fit his comfort level with the fans because, when he tried to get "grown up" on Kingdom Come, the fans rejected it.
He's said repeatedly in interviews that "I didn't think I could ever get back to this place...".....then VOILA! Convenient excuse in the form of a movie.
But of course, now there will be those coming in here saying I'm a Jay hater and what have you, but the facts is the facts.

I wouldn't neccessarily call it an excuse to continue rapping about the same sh!t...because really, do they even need an excuse? Whats to stop or deter them from doing it anyways....its more so calling it a "concept album" is an excuse to give them praise and extra hype for what really ain't all that special...the "concept" of American Gangsta (jay-z as a gleefully regretful drug deal) was nothing out the ordinary from any other Jay-Z album...the "concept" this rumored new Game D.O.C. album is suppossed to be "a day in the life of Game in Compton"......how is that different than his first two albums, exactly?
Yea I know... what kind of bullsh*t concept album is that. Do a concept album about the Smurfs.

this is why Deltron - 3030 is the BEST CONCEPT ALBUM you'll ever hear. You got Del The Funkee Homosapien, a west coast rapper (who isn't really on that gangsta rap tip, but cousin to Ice Cube) rapping about being a Mech Soldeir, looking to escape the decaying planet earth to enter a rap battle in the year 3030.
This is totally out of any rappers element, and probs sumthin you'd expect from Canibus coz how many niccas out there have any idea what the world will be like in the year 3030.

it's a concept because it's a cohesive story from start to finish, it's not an excuse, it's a creative pallet to work from...it's taking inspiration, whatever it is and presenting it as a work of art
nothing about AG was "origonal", but even if you look at the track list, it's a story from begining to end...a story we've all heard, but aint that what the majority of the fans asked for? old jay-z?
him putting "ignorant sh1t" on the album wasnt just for sh1ts and giggles, he was posing a question to the hip hop community, do you want progression or do you want whats familiar? and even then...when people heard the title "american gangsta" they didnt go into that album getting what they expected, so many people were like "where are the hard tracks"
he redefined the current model of the "gangsta" rap album in that it wasnt really about much gangsta sh1t at all...it wasnt "hard" or "vintage, friend or foe" jay-z, it's got the same underlying them as reasonable doubt but it's really a different monster
the word "concept" is just another word for something cohesive and well put together, that is exactly what AG is
i honestly want jay to go back to kingdom come on the next album, no matter how these young pricks feel about the content, AG was great for what it was...jay rapping as a character (all rappers, rap as characters at points and times in their careers), i want to hear jay-z the person again reguardless if the masses are ready for it, ghostface rehashes concepts and does the same albums over and over again for his last couple joints...but it's all good music/rhymes, and i dont hear any of his fans complaining about it either

yeah those named right there...are truely ORIGONAL "concept" albums
as for AG, the big difference between it and AG is that it's much more organized...lyrically theres obviously not as much dexterity, but the production is much more cohesive and inline with the rhymes...no real "drop offs" from the concept that was RD with joints like 22 twos, everything fits, even hello brooklyn and blue magic (i'd have to go in depth for that one, but it does fit the concept even tho most people say it comes out of nowhere)
if you took RD, gave it better beats/instrumentation that actually fit the moods of the songs, cut the amount of words by about 25% and you have a modern day RD, it's done in 3 seperate acts like a real live/movie screenplay in which you can activly tell what part of the story you're in, act 2 is the second of songs i play the most
lyrically, jay is murdering this album, way less hit or miss beats than kingdom come (the only real problem with that album, worst produced jigga album ever), quotes, themes...it's all there, it's just not terribly origonal, but who really cares as long as it's good music? it's one of the few "front to back" playable albums in a long time
it does nothing to harm or hurt jay's legacy...just another great album from a great artist

MMLP, just on the basis that slim shady is a separate entity from eminem makes it a concept album....yall giving the word "concept" too much credit, all it is, is a cohesive idea put into album form
This whole "concept album" phase is a excuse for MCs to continue rappin bout the same ish
guns/drugs/streets.... what a horrible ass concept

LOL props. I've been meaning to make this thread for a minute, but not exactly the same thing. I feel like a concept album is a safe way to rap about whatever you want without any responsibility. It's like you don't have to take full credit for the song because it's only a concept and not really coming from you as an indivdual. So while you're taking a chance in doing a concept album in itself, you're not taking a chance at exposing yourself as an artist, because you can use the concept excuse. It's a means of taking a risk without taking a risk and a way of rapping about topics maybe you as an artist shouldn't rap about for whatever reasons.
