I remember Wendy Day saying something about this as far as limiting the value of you work. You charge what you think it's worth or whatever you feel the artist deserves to pay for it. Yeah we(producers) trying to spread the brand around, but it's cats trying to get just the same. So in a way you create your own market depending upon what the situation is. The most I've charge tho for an unknown myself was 250 and that was with the hook and all mastered. But I was all analog then too so that extra cream came in handy for cables and new headphones.

If a dude is willing to pay $1,000 for a beat how you gawn say no to that? But at the same time you ain't trying to scare away no clientelle. Ain't nothing wrong with negotiations either though. You say $500 from jump and see what they say - how they react. Then be like, "well that's what I usually do but let me see if I could do better."

$100-$200

Depends also on your discography.. if you've been doing tracks for well-known artists and putting out hot tracks, you deserve to up the price. If an artist is serious about this music ish, they'll pay.

You also don't want to sell yourself short.

Yo, You guys definitely want to check out this site. Real Ad execs (as well as other industry pros) are signed up here looking for brand new music to put in commercials, TV, movies.... The owners of this site has clients that include Nike, Nissan, ect. Sign up is FREE. There is NO membership fee and they dont even ask for your music, just a link to where your music can be heard (myspace,Itunes...) for your profile, and those execs that want to use your music contact you directly! (no fee!)

Now I don't want to sound like a commercial but this pretty much explains what this site is about:

There is a brand new hot community site from Los Angeles that connects new talent with industry pros from the commercial, TV, film and record industry... and in contrast to myspace it filters out the junk before hand!

So...

If you are a band searching for the decision makers in the media industry to promote your music...
If you work at a record label searching for new ways to promote your bands and get cooperations...
If you are a creative director searching for music for the next commercial, film or TV- show...
If you just love music and want to contribute your opinion about bands...

Go to WWW.TUNEJAR.COM (http://WWW.TUNEJAR.COM)

It can make you life a lot easier... on whatever side you’re standing, and all for free. Site launches Jan 15th, so sign up now and be among the first to be heard.
