If I go hard on an eliptical for 20 minutes 4 times a week, is that the same as running? I hurt my knee, and it's gonna be a few weeks until it heals (with the help of this (http://www.tv-products.net/pimages/flexofactor.jpg))....but can I shed if I do eliptical for 20-25 minutes?
I also have the option of hitting the rowing machine rowing machine (http://www.anything-direct.com/fitness/carl-lewis-romf51.jpg) too. My lifting shouldn't be affected (except for legs of course).

No it is not the same as running. But it is a good substitute for walking.
The hierarchy of fat burning cardio machines is Rower>Treamill>Elliptical>Bike
The rower is a monster depending on the sampper setting you put it on I would go rower over all its total body.

i set the rower at the highest level.....im gonna step it up to that for 20 minutes....it's really no joke.
Only thing im worried about is that strap pulling at the part of my knee that hurts (when I lean back).

See now I see. If you have a problem impacting your knee thats when the elliptical comes in handy. Use the rower one day and elliptical the next but make no mistake about it the elliptical fails in comparison to running. Also on the elliptical make sure you actually use the arm bars.

c/s. The elliptical is no substitute for actual running. Hell, a treadmill isn't a substitute either. This is good advice. Mix it up and try to rehab. Good luck mayne.

damn, i thought it was in my head. I've also noticed that when i would run outside in the summer it was significantly harder than running on a treadmill.

It goes under the elliptical.

Nah...I would but the stairmaster btwn the treadmill and the bike. The elliptical is extremely easy.

actually, very fast power-walking is the next-best thing to running, calorie-burning wise. it trumps most machines if you go hard. and it's not nearly as hard on your joints and knees and shyt as running.
but i know that a lot of dudes think it looks "gay" to be seen power walking..

It is mad suspect.
Yup as mentioned previously, theres nothing like the real thing. The most effective cardiovascular work out will be doing the running yourself. But if you are training for a marathon (which I doubt) the treadmill is the best choice with limited exposure to the outdoor as possible. If you are trying to lose calories the Elliptical Machine is useful because the actual lack of impact on the joints allows you to burn same amount as you would using a treadmill.

it's not bad if you do it every day. i can barely run becuz i have a shin splint so i used the eliptical as a sub for the time being.
please believe that when my leg is better that i will being doing my regular 2 miles/day.

I'm quite top heavy and i never ran much since twisted my ankle several years back. Desperately seeking to shed some pounds cuz i wanted a girlfriend, i began the cardiovascular stuff to up my physique.
Running vigorously when i initially started caused me to develop a mild case of shin splints. Damn, that shiit hurt, Kurt!!!
So now i'm back on the eliptical thang doing that slide stuff. It's cool. I tend to last longer on it and sweat like a C&C music video.
It doesn't necessarily help me shed off pounds, but it helps me maintain the weight i'm at. All i have to do now is continue my usage of Hydroxycut, eat smart and chillax on the spirits (well, that is, until the weekend when i tend to binge my ass off beligerently).

i just stick to the basics:
push - up' s
sit - up' s
lifting weights
and running.
that usually makes me diesel.
stick to the basics that' s all.
peace.
