whats good

i been goin to one for about a month now. i can't speak for all gyms but nowadays there more friendly towards casual aka white-collar boxers, so you don't gotta worry about being intimidated or anything. sparring is always optional, and me personally i would say boxing is the best workout you can get

just go in there and pay them they month fee and workout.fukk you scared of?i been boxing since i was in 3rd grade and its the best workout you could get.
now if you dont know how to box you are gonna look like a fool if you just go in using the equipment so you gonna need to get a trainer.
i never paid for no trainer so it aint nothing extra and if you go to a real boxing gym the trainer aint gonna charge you nothing.they gonna teach you footwork how to properly throw your punches and defense and how to use the bags.
and dont be sparing till you been boxing for at least 3 monthes cuse all you gonna be doing is throwing wild punches and getting hit alot and its not gonna really gonna teach you anything.
keep at it for like a year and you should be allright

I feel you dude. Back when I started boxing in high school I was scared too. Seen *****s put down a 200 pound punching bag. Everyone is scared at first, but after the shock and awe you getting the feeling of a warrior. You seen it and now you wan it feeling. Training is ya friend so go there and train. Be friendly and open also since most of the boxers there will throw tips your way. Always listen and throw that rocky shyt of the window.

Last tip

You will get your ass whip in sparring, but don't let it get too you. It's like getting jumped in to the world of boxing. Learn from your mistakes and train.

Good luck

i've done JUDO...TKD...and some MT

i box now....i box to be competitive...i want to fight.....so thats why i pay a trainer....

too many gyms are freindly (which is a good thing)...and so open to the public that it effects the training you get....paying for a trainer is expensive but you will get better training...YES better training......

to the threadstarter what are you looking to do...just get a good workout...fight...self defense....tone up?

@ 17 your an age alot of trainers will want to fukk with you...especially if you looking to scrap.....

just walk in ask for help...they will ask you what you looking for....then set you up....

and most gyms have equipment...only equipment you really need is a mouthpiece (if you spar) hand wraps...boxing boots.....

BTW what city you at.....?

If you have a trainer, just be prepared to do some vomiting the 1st week.

If not, spend at least 20 total minutes on the heavy bag, do 15 total minutes on the speed bag, and when no one is in the ring, 10 min of side straddle hops should be enough to get you warm.

When you can handle those, you'll be trying to get a trainer next.

~shadow box 3-4 rds
~heavy bag 3-4 rds
~uppercut bag 2-3 rds
~double end bag 2-3
~speed bag (very difficult @ 1st) 2-3 rds
~floorwork

trainers come at different prices....you get some that are happy just to train you for whatever you can afford...and you get some that want to cash in.....

they are trainers in gyms that have train champions that will charge you reasonably....ask around....

the usual is about $10-$35 an hour....but you can work with alot of them.....

getting your hands certified i think that happens when you start fighting at an amateur level...

^^^^check this list to see the gyms in LA my dude...LA BOXING is legendary...many fighters/champs have train there....

good luck.....

Are you gonna be steppin' in the ring?

If so, relax...they're not gonna start you off with sparring.

No good trainer would do that.

You're gonna start off conditioning...bag work, jump rope, movement drills, and what not...

You ain't gonna step in that ring for awhile...and even then, you're gonna have all the protective equipment you need. And you're in there with someone better than you who isn't gonna swing for the fences and fukk you up when you swing for the fences. And you WILL swing for the fences...I can guarantee you ain't gonna be jabbin' in there first time out.

if you don't work out regularly or out of shape you will be throwing up after a workout....

BOXING has alot of cardio drills....and body wieght exercises....wieghts are usually never recommended...(you will shadow box with wieghts in ya hands...and trust me you will feel that sh!t)

alot of dips...pullups...situps...pushups....1st couple of days expect severe soreness....and the urge to vomit.....

^^^^^^^thats my workout when i started...to a vet its nothing...but as a starter you will feel that afterwards....

GOOD LUCK...try it out homie....

just thought i'd update yall on my boxing gym experience..

ended up going to the local police community youth centre thing.. cos i figured it'll be all young guys.. not as intense as a real boxing gym or whatever..

i walk in.. intimidating sight ..
its the venue where alot of local filipino boxers fight.. and the head trainer was filipino.. coincidence that im filipino aswell ( living in australia ).. i dont even know if this made me more comfortable or more uncomfortable.. but i was still in shock.. the training looked real intense dudes in the ring belting each other.. people on bags u know the whole deal.. me and my mate just stood in the background for a good 15 minutes.. intimidated.. but i already paid for my membership so u know im not letting that go to waste.. i recognised one of the fighteres in there as someone i saw fight on tv so that gave the gym enough credibility to me..

then their session ended and the next session luckily was more.. made up of beginners.

we did some running

3 rounds of shadow boxing
6 rounds of bag work
skipping
than calisthenics.

only went for around 50 minutes.. but he told us usually just come in do your thing and he'll be there to throw you advice.. and the structured sessions are only like twice a week but its good to just go in your own time..

good ass experience.. the work out was good.. i feel the burn in my back and shoulers and brachi's.. and feel fitter than i did yesterday and at the end of the day thats what i want..

cheers
anybody wanna offer more advice?. what else should i look at doing and asking while im in there

Yeah, I'm thinkin' about gettin' in a gym too...I got a friend that box and in middle school everyday he used to teach me techniques and help me with my speed, power and things of that nature since than I been heavy into boxing...how does it affect your lifestyle once you get straight into it?...if I don't get into it competitively than I wanna use it for a workout.
