I started Octavia Butler - Fledgling last night!

I've finished the book it was pretty good. I know for sure if she wouldn't have passed away she would at least made a Part II. I admired Shori so much! not because she was willing to ride or die for her symobiant (sp) but she didn't take things at face value. She knew the laws were fukked up but she used them to her advantage...

I've come to the conclusion that I wouldn't be a symobiant (sp) I don't like the idea of someone having that much power or me. But the idea of living for 200+ years without aging at a rapid rate is a plus. I would def. want to visit and learn more about the Ian.

I enjoyed this book although it had its moments of boredom. I saw a lot of myself in Shori. Cause I myself need to learn more about my family and reconnect with a few. She was a strong Ian who I'm sure would prob. go on to become a well respected Ian.

To add to why being a symobiant is like being married because Shori has to care and protect them. She has to provide them with a home and to make them feel comfortable similar to how you would be with your mate moreso the husband (imo).

The connection between Shori and her symobiants weren't one sided they both needed one another and that's kinda like a marriage in some ways.

She has to be honest with them as best as she can the pros and cons of being with her. And I think in the case of Wright he got fukked cause he didn't know everything and by the time he does well it's 2 late he's hooked. But I think his feelings for her went beyond their symboiant relationship what you think?

But if the person decides to walk away she can just tell them to forget all about her and pretend it was just a dream or something and I'm sure they go back to their regular lives....

Yeah Theodora didn't deserve to die, she just didn't want to be lonely anymore. Shori was so pissed, I could just picture her looking all mad yet not really scaring anyone cause of her size and height.

Okay I loved the book for that as well and not only that but on some levels can you compare how Shori was treated as to how some black folks/ poor folks are treated in our justice system? Okay here me out lol for example if you are a young black/poor person and you can't afford a lawyer one is provided for you right? just like Shori was provided with representation. Also, the Silks to me represented our present day jury system. Since our jury system is supposed to be set up by our peers. And you noticed how the Gordans called to see which families they though would show favortism and the Gordans asked that they not attend. Similar to how a lawyer picks the jurors for a trial. I think that punishment was enough. I think family and the continuation of the family means a lot to the Ian people. And not being able to carry on the family imo is a huge sentence for them. What do you think?

And you noticed how they ask where Shori would be going? cause like she mentioned I think if she was adopted into a family then her last name would change and she would be fair game for revenage which I honestly think regardless of the decision of the trial they are gonna try to get.

I really wanted to see Shori kill that chick for what she did to Theodora. I think if she would have misfired I think Shori would have killed her.....

And that's a good question. And honestly I think it may have made a slight difference. Look at our society and how some of us think white/light = good and dark = bad. Light skin women are sometimes favored higher than women of darker shades. I think if she was able to blend in more with the other Ian it could have made a diff. but not that much....

And I agree with you I think the desire for the older Ian to finally walk in the daytime intrigued many of them....

And not only did the Silk's believe the others would be on there side but they were also a well respected family 2. And they thought that by killing Theodora that Shori would act a fool but she got their asses in the end....

Okay I loved the book for that as well and not only that but on some levels can you compare how Shori was treated as to how some black folks/ poor folks are treated in our justice system? Okay here me out lol for example if you are a young black person and you can't afford a lawyer one is provided for you right? just like Shori was provided with representation. Also, the Silks to me represented our present day jury system. Since our jury system is supposed to be set up by our peers. And you noticed how the Gordans called to see which families they though would show favortism and they could deny. Similar to how a lawyer pics the jurors for a trial. i now notice the parrelles between ther trail and ours. I did get the feeling that this decision will hold weight in that community and that it will forever change how they interact with each other (kind of like brown vs bored of ed). I dont know about the black/poor get rep it seems that her lack of ina cultrue was her only weakness and not her name or finanical standing. I saw the trial more as a right for Shori to be Ina even though she is half breed. She is accepted by some and not others just like biracial children have to choose one race when they are neither. To answer you question i do notice that poor repesantaion does cause people to do more time or go to jail for crimes they did not do (mostly black/lantino). That is what is wrong with our justice system where the rich can still get away with crimes while the poor cant. To me that is not justice at all.


I think Shori should have had the chance to wipe out the guilty silks cause of the importance she is to there race i mean if humans ever found out about them and decided to go on a killing spree then shori decendents will be able to defend themselves while the weaker ones will die out.

yeah shori didnt show her azz at the end. She kept calm and let the silks trip themselves up. The Silks ended up looking like the monsters when they were suppose to be better then everyone else. lol I like the way russel Silk tried to jump Shori at the end i thought her tiny self was about to fukk that grown dude up. :laugh:

That is a hard one. i would go the youner routie but then they cant stay faithful to what i found good about the book. You could prob get away with jada pinket (height). i can see her doing the parts were she has to be fierce but i dont know about the love scenes i have yet to see that side of her. It would have to be a short actress though.

i checked out some of his books and a few others. I like the between by tananarive due and Steven barnes Charisma. I am leaning more towards the between though cause i like the issues it deals with and time travel/ alternete universe theories are topics i like.
