On some no bullsh*t. SOHH is losing its creativity on how to compare these 2. Its almost corny witnessing failed attempts to be funny dissing one or the other ....lets just get back to the music.
If you were a Nas/Hov fan since day one I understand. Me personally, I was 5 years old when illmatic came out so I aint even gonna front like I knew what was up when illmatic or Reasonable Doubt dropped. It took an effort to go BACK and listen to the 2 in my teenage years.
Just thought I'd throw this topic out there since I havent seen it in awhile. Whether your a Nas fan or a Jay fan or both (we call you bistansuals now) what was the ONE song that completely turned you into favor with Hov or Esco? What was the ONE song that made you think "damn? Why am I sleeping on this dude!?
For Jay it had to been the collective effort done on The Black Album. I was 14and at the time and I really didnt know much about Hov or the history of the rap game for that matter. All this "Jay retirement" hype intrigued me to go back and dig up dude's past to understand the Jay-z that was presented before me. I went and PURCHASED Reasonable Doubt, loved it ....and went in order and copped Vol.1 and so on and studied that sh*t.
It took me awhile to catch on to Nas though. The average 15 year old at the time probably didnt give 2 f*cks about Nas and neither did I. It just took one day I was driving shotgun with one of my uncles and he had that illmatic blastin. "N.Y State Of Mind" was all it took......and the rest was history. (repeat Hov steps)
Jay = Black Album
Nas = N.Y State of Mind
those were basically the 2 movements that got me hooked onto both of them. So my question is what is the ONE or TWO songs that just made you 100% focused on that artist.
Why dont yall start to appreciate them rather than hate
I didn't think a thread like this was actually possible on SOHH.
Anyway, If I ruled the World was the track that put me on to Nas. It took me a couple albums after that to really study dudes work though. I remember Ain't No ***** playing on the radio a lot back when Reasonable Doubt dropped, but I really got into Jay and listened to all his albums/unreleased tracks after Hard Knock Life.

i never f*cked with jay-z until i heard "a week ago", before that i wouldn't say i hated him but i just didn't care about his music at all, he was just another random rapper. i f*cked with nas music since day number 1 though, and still do, since the first time i heard "live at the bbq"
Well I was born in 88', so I'm a youngin', I remember I liked Izzo, so I went and "copped" :guilty: Blueprint from Wal-Mart for $Free.99. And then I copped Reasonable Doubt and the rest is history.
In Nas' case, I slept on him for years, even after hearin' 'Ether', I was like "Is this dude really dissin' Jay cuz he doesn't have facial hair, then sayin he's a rat wit whiskers", then I hear 'Doo Rags', and just gratually started hearing his songs, and copped Illmatic...and that was it for me...
Jay and Nas are really in a class all by themselves, since Big and Pac are gone, so I expect them to be compared to each other, and now even more since they're doin tracks together, and I can imagine a collabrative album in the future....

The first time I heard Jay was on "Ain't no niqqa" and "I'll be" with foxy. I hated him. I thought he was corny and trying to hard to be a player/biggie. Then I gave him a chance when vol.1, and I was impressed, but it took me a while to get used to his annoying voice.
With Nas, I guess when "if I ruled the world" came out.

when i was in 5th grade i would always go to cd warehouse to trade in stolen/old cds to get new ones. they didn't have three 6 mafia - the end, which is the cd i wanted to get so i started looking around and saw the in my lifetime vol 1. at the time i was into puffy and mase and jay's cover looked like something they would have. it was a tie between him and AZ. so i was like **** it jay is cheaper and i got the tape. then i listened to the whole thing on my boombox up in my room playing madden 97 and i was hooked. first time i heard streets is watchin then the transition into friend or foe 98 i was blown away.
for nas it was probably "hate me now" because i was in middle school and at first i didn't think it was all that good but my boy bought the cd and i borrowed it one day at lunch and thought it was an alright cd. at that same time though i was listening to the new jay, dmx, three 6, no limit, and cash money cds non stop so i didn't really care about nas. i've never really given a **** about nas to be honest. unless i'm high and listening to illmatic he really gets no play.

i heard the hype about IWW originally, but copped illmatic first and went from there, I Am was the first joint i bought when it dropped
copped in my lifetime first for jay, gotta dubbed tape of vol 2 and then bought RD
i was pissed listening to dynasty cuz the intro is some of the hardest **** ever recorded but he forced those lesser rappers on his album, then dropped blueprint, totally satisfied me, went back to his crew, realized they were wack, then hasn't had a guest appearance ever since, that's DOPE
weird how only nas album like that is lost tapes, he needs another one like that

...with Jay it was "Ain't no *****". I knew of him due to the Original Flavor shyt...but when I heard Ain't no N!gga's first verse, I just knew there was something special about him. The style was different, his charisma and braggadocio was off the meter throughout the song and it just made me know he was a n!gga to look out for in the future. I loved the Reasonable Doubt LP cause it was centered around the theme of "Hustling", and the final nail in the coffin was "22 2's":ohmy::ohmy:. N!gga been the shyt from then on.
...never been a Nas fan. He's always been a second-rate Rakim to me. I was highly anticipating Illmatic because MC Serch was suppose to be involved with the project (I'm the biggeast 3rd Bass fan of all). It was a big disappointment to me (Memory Lane was excellent though). I gave him a second chance to win me over with IWW...initially it was also weak to me so I was like "Fukk it, ain't no need of me wasting any more of my time on this
n!gga.". He has drops songs I like here and there, but to me he's an average rapper.
I like em both. Started liking Nas with If I Ruled Tha World. Started liking Jay with Hard Knock Life or Sunshine.

jay i didn't get into until 10th grade after hearing money cash hoes (dmx and bone thugs was all i listened to at that time). my moms bought the album (vol 2) and i was listening to it in the car while she was working (home healthcare nurse). i think i sat out there for like an hour taking the whole album in and i was like damn dude ain't half bad. i still like jay, but i stopped buying his albums after the dynasty. it just straight sucked to me.
the 1st nas album i really listened to and arguably (sp?) was his worse in alot of peoples opinion, was nastradamus. my moms bought it for me for christmas when i was in 11th grade and i was like, "nas?? i don't listen to this nygga". but i was a grateful lil nygga so i took it in my room and i listened. truth be told there was alot of wack joints on that album, but the ones that did stand out like life we chose and family were so hot i overlooked the fillers and its still one of my favorite albums to this day. from there i started collecting his old stuff.

hov. 98. hard knock life song and album. It was really the first explicit rap album I owned(tho i had liked rap since i was five when i heard mama said knock u out). I fell in love with that ****in album and started going back and coppin his other ****. got RD and vol 1. I dont think i copped vol 3 til after dynasty(which i copped first day). fell in love with that album too and its still a personal classic to me. after blueprint i became the biggest hov stan on earth that i am today.
with nas I remember "If i ruled the world" but didnt really pay much attention to him til ether. then went back and listened to illmatic and copped stillmatic and god's son and later SD And HHId.

I'm like most people outside of the NY area I think; I heard Nas for the first time when "Street Dreams" and "If I Ruled" played on the radio station. "If I Ruled" was the exception to alot of the stuff that they played at the time and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I recall feeling the lyrics, which I thought were poetic for a radio rap song... Even though most people I know were not really feeling it. The DJs here even made a song making fun of it which was mad funny. But that put me onto Nas, first listen...
Jay-Z is tougher to say...my memory is kinda hazy because dude was went from obscurity to a giant everywhere at once. I even liked the song "Ain't No N*gga" before I knew anything about dude. His flow on there was nice, but I didnt know he was a lyrical dude until around I heard the Million & One Questions Remix...think it was the remix anyway. Thats the joint that did it for me right there. I had to hear that in order to believe the dude who came with "Sunshine" deserved a second look.
"In the darkest night let off my gat for light"
"I slow flows ya'll to death..." etc.

Thats curious the Black Album got you into Jay.
I'd say I had smatterings of interest with his hits, mostly Money Cash Hoes/Big Pimpin time until I finally listened to RD.
As for Nas, probably the same deal. IWW but yuck to this day at Oochie Wally
