1999 - Yep. Chronic was the only classic album that mattered that year. That also broke out Slim Shady LP, NL Top Dogg, Streetz Iz A Mutha, Eastsidaz came up, and there was much talk over the NWA Reunion. Master P was becoming a superstar as well, and he was fuccin' with the West Coast in a major way.

1996 - Be that as it may, "5 On It" was gettin' more play than anything off of those. Also, "Bow Down" was killin' chit with no airplay, That was the best year for Bay Rap. Too $hort 'retiring' was big news. Dre left Death Row and started Aftermath. Makaveli alone shut the year down.

Everybody in this thread so far is exaggerating.

I'm not one for revisionist history so I'll say it like this: people weren't even concerned with who "ran" what until the West was dominant in '93- it was pretty much 50/50 in the few years leading up to that. '94 is debatable, because while the East def. came back strong musically that year, the West was still dominating charts and radio. '95 is another debatable year, but by the end of that year, the East was in the lead. '96 was def. the year it went back East but again, the West was still strong, and other areas were doing well too- that was prob'ly the most well-balanced year if you wanna talk about music from all the regions getting to shine at once. In '97 up to about '01, the East was dominant (with the West making a strong comeback in '99-2000 and the South rising). '02 is hard to call- cause if you wanna be real about it, THE NEPTUNES ran that year. '03 up until '07 has pretty much been mostly about the South.
