View Full Version : Im sorry but Biggie Smalls cannot be mentioned when talking Best of All Time

I love Big to death peeps, so this aint a hate thread, but Biggie just cant be considered when talking about the best ever. Plain and simple he catalouge is far to short and thin. We only have 2 albums to judge him off of. No one can be considered the best in their profession after on 2 attempts....You cant call a teacher the best after only 2 years. We couldnt call Jordan the best after only 2 years....Ali couldnt be the best after only his 2nd heavyweight fight.

You right. That catalogue was short, but the fact that he put out 2 classics. He's batting 2/2... thats 100%.
Now he gets all that credit. He the only rapper to have ever only released classics and he has the best Debut and sophomore albums together ever for a 1 and 2, plus between 95-97 he was the... drum roll...... best rapper alive. Now only that last point is debatable.

Ready to die certified......Life After Death, not the same impact. Its not unanimous on that one. Even if it was 2 albums is waaay to short to earn the crown against a cat like Jay who did it for at least 4+ years, which judges a very important factor of consistency

Pound for Pound BIG is the best (no pun intended)
but due to his short career, he drops down a couple notches
Jay-Z wouldnt be who he is if BIG hadnt passed

LAD is not a classic. Should have only been 1 disc, then it would have been classic. and threadstarter has a point. Need more than 2 albums to be considered the absolute best ever, if not, I'm nominating D.O.C. before his voice died as GOAT.

and Jay falls well behind Cube who has been doing it since the mid 80s, with a far greater impact than any album Jay has dropped. With that said, Jay is sick with it.

biggie is number 1
People don't like to admit it, but it's true....
I mean I think Biggie was a great emcee, and a better artist than people give him credit for. He was much more than just a hot 16, he was an awesome story teller, had impecable flow and delivery, and had the versatility to spit with anybody on any type of record.
But the thread starter is right, 2 albums ain't enough to compete against the catalogues of the greats.
Biggie came in at a time where west coast hip hop was dominating the charts and the airplay and NY was jealous to be real about it. So when Biggie came out and was able to bring some of the light back to the east, New York rallied behind him.
My personal top 5, in no particular order, is Pac, Nas, Ra, Cube, and Jay. There's no way you can compare Biggie's 2 albums to these artists long list of accomplishments.

Biggie did a lot in 2 cd's... and when he died he was geting better...
Plus..
I'm seeing body after body and our mayor Guiliani
ain't tryin to see no black man turn to John Gotti
My daughter use a potty so she's older now
Educated street knowledge I'ma mold 'er now
Trick a little dough buyin young girls fringes
Dealin with the dope fiend binges, seein syringes
in the vein; hard to explain, how I maintain
The crack smoke make my brain feel so strange
Breakin days on the set, no sweat
Drunk off Moet, can't bag yet because it's still wet
But when that dry, baggin five at a time
I can clock about nine on the check cashin line
I had the first and the third; rehearse that's my word
Thick in the game, D's knew my first name
Should I quit? **** no! Even though they had me scared
Yo they got a eight, I gotta teck with air holes..
the flow.... the story telling.... the lyrics.. yeah...

I love Cube, he's in my top 10 no doubt. But I could argue Dre had more impact than him with ONE CD. And best believe you shouldn't short change the impact Biggie had on the East Coast.

Cube influenced an entire nation, not just one coast.
Dre and Cube were both on SOC, which is far more impactful than any of their solos, combined.

Ice Cube's AMW & DC > BIG's RTD and LAD
BIG was possible the best POTENTIAL emcee ever as he had the total package, but due to his death, he never got the opportunity to live up to his potential

whats the universally agreed upon hip hop minimum for number of albums to be in the running for GOAT again? i keep forgetting, someone remind me why a rapper cant prove himself with 2 albums.....
but i guess using this logic Sam Cooke should not be mentioned with the best musicians since he too had passed before he had a large body of work.

You're missing the point. More artists did MORE work, with MORE albums. Big did 2. Thats a pretty low number compared to artists with more classical and timeless works. As I've stated before, lets put D.O.C. in the GOAT convo simply because of No One Can Do It Better.:thumbsdow
See how stupid that sounds?
