I was watching an interview with NE-YO where he quoted Jayz..Basically saying that if it takes you longer than 1 hour to make a song..then you should scrap it, because you are forcing it after that point. Like it isn't coming out naturally.

:thumbsdow

Ol same ol' same ol ass sucka..

No wonder half the tracks he's written have the same delivery as So Sick. Im dead serious. Listen to the way he sings the hook for that song, then go ahead and listen to that new track with Rhianna..but I digress

Please, people of the HipHop Production Nation. Take time to write your music and craft your sound. Take pride in the fact that your music has the potential to change peoples lives and inspire CHANGE AND REVOLUTION!!

Maybe thats a bit extreme, but please think outside of the 4x4x16x8x16 context and learn about progressions and instrument solos.

And yes, I am as guilty of this as anybody else is. So Im not blaming anybody for anything. But when someone says this beat took me 30 minutes to make.........I usually believe them

Because as much as ya'll think its about big machines and lucky breaks. Making good music takes a lifetime. Timbo is just his stride after 15+ years. Scott Storch played classical for 10+ years before gigging with the Roots. Dr. Dre was sampling and DJ'ing before he understood the process of running a label. Those are just the most basic examples of people that took their time and studied the craft.

I agree..

Brian Mcknight said he's had a single melody for a song in his head for 2 years but has not wrote one lyric yet. Said when it comes it'll come. can't rush it..

Word!!! Thats why I probably still haven't made a beat yet and I have had my MPC 2500 since Jan... i just have been sittin around brain boggled without focus... you know I'll get some records together I be like yeah I'm sample these drums from this David Axelrod record and this snare and guitar riff from this Red Rider joint and then two hours later I'm sittin there with a drum, snare , & guitar lick lookin at Blowfly record talkin bout I should sample some vocals of this then I end up samplin some drums instead and lose my train of thought and forget about what wanted to do initially ,with the sounds already loaded into the pads... it really gets fustrating and it don't help that I am a full time college student... But I figure eventually I will get it down to a science...

He was talking about Songwriting. But to me, songwriting, playing, and producing is all one in the same
