It's hard to say how rap would even be now if Illmatic had never came out.

Hell no.
Illmatic would fukk up the whole scene... production from Large Professor, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, L.E.S. in this day would flip the rap world inside out... and dont say nothin about Pitch Black either them n!ggas is garbage (even though I cop their sh!t)

if album was released today, I would call it the same thing that I call it anyway... the GOAT hip hop album. It would actually seem that much better in today's wack hip hop climate.

Nah thats what makes Illmatic  cuz it came out in the GOLDEN days of hiphop and it still made everyone

Thats why its the goat album. It was superior quality when quality was abundant

first of all it would never come out on a major label
second of all, its like asking if war and peace (the book) came out today would people call it classic ? yeah, but there would be so few people reading (listening) it that no one would care

yes... crazy fukkin beat, but lyrically they are trash... hot production, trash lyrics... hence why I say dont mention Pitch Black because they're the only guys with production credits close to Illmatic in todays rap climate (Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Teddy Riley, Alchemist etc.) did you even listen to Pitch Black's albums? don't try and say they're lyrically nice

if illmatic was released today no one would know. with all these mixtapes out, a rapper with one or two appearances on other songs wouldnt get as much attention as he did then.

Music always captures a specific time period, and that's what makes it classic. If Illmatic came out today, it wouldn't feel the same because the sh*t would be 13-14 years later. It would sound like a niqqa tryin' to rehash '94. The same way that if Run-DMC's first album came out in '97, muhfukkas wouldn't have paid the sh*t any mind. A lot of albums are classics because of the time they came out... and they just so happen to still sound good for that reason. I grew up during that time and I STILL don't like to hear rappers now tryin' to come out with some new sh*t that sounds like it's from '93. If I wanna hear some '93 sh*t, I'd rather listen to the actual music FROM '93 that I experienced and enjoyed.

It would be trash to the peepz that matter most......the buying market. It would be labeled somewhere as "Most Slept On" but what satisfaction would that get ya.

And it never was classic to me. A couple of classic tracks but that's it. Even when it first came out.
