View Full Version : Frank Lucas JR: 'Jay-Z DOESNT KNOW WHAT 'BLUE MAGIC' IS'

And as far as Jay-Z’s portrayal of American Gangster, he doesn’t understand what "Blue Magic" is. He never satisfied the consumer, or educated them about "Blue Magic", and he never explained that. So if you’re going to tell the story, get it right. And the first rule of Hip-Hop is; don’t bite. He has nothing to do with The American Gangster; he never talked to my father.

going to tell the story? the fucc, it's not like the song was meant to be a detailed examination of Blue Magic. if anything i think he did it that way on purpose so your curiosity is piqued and you watch the movie to find out more. plus the Denzel snippet at the end helped.

is Jay even in the movie? why would he promote a project, he has nothing to do with? it would seem as if he'd have actual DEF JAM artists to promote, rather than a movie he's not in..

what is blue magic?http://nymag.com/nymag/features/3649/
Back in the early seventies, there were many "brands" of dope in Harlem. Tru Blu, Mean Machine, Could Be Fatal, Diick Down, Boody, Cooley High, Capone, Ding Dong, Fucc Me, Fucc You, Nice, Nice to Be Nice, Oh -- Can't Get Enough of That Funky Stuff, Tragic Magic, Gerber, The Judge, 32, 32-20, O.D., Correct, Official Correct, Past Due, Payback, Revenge, Green Tape, Red Tape, Rush, Swear to God, PraisePraisePraise, KillKillKill, Killer 1, Killer 2, KKK, Good Shiit, Taster's Choice, Harlem Hijack, Joint, Insured for Life, and Insured for Death were only a few of the brand names rubber-stamped onto cellophane bags. But none sold like Frank Lucas's Blue Magic.
"That's because with Blue Magic, you could get 10 percent purity," Lucas asserts. "Any other, if you got 5 percent, you were doing good. We put it out there at four in the afternoon, when the cops changed shifts. That gave you a couple of hours before those lazy bastards got down there. My buyers, though, you could set your watch by them. By four o'clock, we had enough niccas in the street to make a Tarzan movie. They had to reroute the bus on Eighth Avenue. Call the Transit Department if it's not so. By nine o'clock, I ain't got a fuccing gram. Everything is gone. Sold . . . and I got myself a million dollars.
"I'd sit there in Nellybelle and watch the money roll in," says Frank Lucas of those near-forgotten days when Abe Beame lay his pint-size head upon the pillow at Gracie Mansion. "And no one even knew it was me. I was a shadow. A ghost . . . what we call down home a haint . . . That was me, the Haint of Harlem."

second, yes. these dudes are p*ssys, why shouldn't frank lucas's fam put the squeeze on them for throwing his name around? gangsters live by a different creed, weak n!ggas like jay-z and t.i. can't be that loose with the lips publically, not unless somebody's getting paid.

Uh he's doing more than mentioning him in lines he is basing a whole album on his life. A bit different don't you think.
I hear where the son Lucas is coming. Ideally Jay should go thru the proper channels to get this concept done right. But he's part of the machine and really doesn't have to answer to the inspiration behind the story just those putting it on film. Glazer is cool w/ Jigga's move so I'm sure Jigga feels justified in making the album.
If Frank Lucas and his son feel a way about it they are entitled to that as well.

Ok, I'm not a big Jay fan (and I've gotten on him too), but come on. Jay's album is only serving as a soundtrack for the movie. It has nothing to do with Jay personally. He already stated in his latest interview that he isn't Frank Lucas. For those that don't know what Blue Magic is. It's a stronger and purer form of heroin. That was sold in blue packets

so? so is sammy gravano. but i bet if you go to arizona right now... well not right now since he's back in the joint but if you'd a went there when he was active you'd definitely have to pay a tribute to him for using his name to get money. everybody knew he was a snitch and he STILL ran a multi-state ecstacy ring and provided protection for an Aryan gang out there. just because a gangster isn't a stand up guy doesn't mean they're not still a gangster.

This is all true. I just think dude is misplacing his aggression. If he had a problem with his pops' story being exploited, there shouldn't be a blockbuster movie about it. All Jay's involvement ends up doing is promoting the movie further.

Jay said he was "inspired" by the movie...he's not making an album to tell Frank's story...he's using it as a vehicle for a concept album. When you say "proper channels"...he most definitely has gone and spoke to the studio & producers of the movie and got the blessing. It's a cross-promotional thing and is definitely not an independent jack move by Hov.

And yes, Frank Lucas Jr. is justified in thinking Jay shoulda came up to the real Frank Lucas but obviously Jay ain't care about the real one...just the one Denzel portrayed. And you still failed to mention why any person should make money off of their name usage. There are albums that are named after celebrities...inspired by the real people...and none of those people made a penny off of it. But Frank Lucas family deserves money for what now?
