They don't have the right to speak on hip hop

This show about Reasonable Doubt for example. Back in '96 when it dropped VH1 was doing shows about the spice girls and george michaels. VH1 didn't even acknowledge that hip hop existed until like 3-4 years ago.

So why the fukk are they making lists, speaking on classic albums, and giving out honors??

It's S.A.N.T.A.N.A.

If they didn't, nobody would.

And truth be told (the reason why VH1 is airing all this shiit), this ain't even a heritage thing, it's all about demographics.

It's not about what they were airing 10 years ago, ten years ago, they weren't a pop culture network, they were a music-driven network aimed at 25-44 (or 25-34) year olds.

MTV and BET won't, because 12-24 year olds don't give a shiit. Like I said, it's not about the heritage (i.e.: what they aired 10 yrs ago) of a network, it's the demos...and more important than all, dollars.

Because they earned the right by paying homage to the old school with documentaries and the VH1 Honors, shows that are vastly superior to any other hip-hop channel's entire current product.

They only do it because it's the biggest market out there, it sells so they care....

Yeah they were a music driven network. And they didn't play any hip hop music.

No one is talking about BET or MTV. This is about VH1. I get heated when I see this channel speaking on hip hop. They only cared about white pop culture back in the 80's, 90's, and early 00's. They basically felt that they were too good for hip hop and chose not to give it exposure. They have absolutely no right to speak on hip hop.

Dunno bout that... BET recently wrapped up the Hip-Hop vs America forum, lots of interesting points about the current state and direction of hip-hop raised in that discussion. BET also broadcasts the well-produced BEEF series, which explores the competitive nature of rap music without celebrating it.

VH1 approaches hip-hop from the perspective of white suburbanites who grew up listening to Run-DMC on mixtapes in Ford Tauruses. They're just completely outside the culture. Weren't they the same ones who did a recent documentary about the sexual objectification of women in rap videos, COMPLETELY IGNORING THE FACT that rock bands do exactly the same thing? To show how hypocritical they are, they did a documentary glorifying the lifestyle of rock groupies (recounting the infamous Led Zeppelin mud shark episode as a classic rock moment)... they even did a couple documentaries paying homage to the interconnectedness between porn and rock... yet they turn around and have the nerve to blast BET Uncut as being sexist and distasteful. Fucc VH1, they have no authority to speak on hip-hop.

They do produce some very entertaining reality shows, and that's what they should stick to.

Where was this when random MTV producers were critiquing the "hottest MC"?

At least VH1 has aired some real Hip-Hop documentaries (there were like 5-6 or them). They've played Wild Style, Style Wars, Krush Groove...

Setting up those Hip Hop Honors performances > anything MTV has ever done

And the ironic thing about it is the same thing can be said about mad people on SOHH and "hip-hop sites"

To be fair to VH-1, they are not the same network that they were 5 years ago. "Porn to Rock" and all that sh*t was totally a different format than they have today. They have a different Pres. and staff, than they used to.

They've completely overhauled their programming to appeal soley to young people. That's why there's so much Paris Hilton, Britney, Hip-Hop, and Flava Flav on there. Hogan Knows Best too. They do Hip-Hop better than MTV or BET does nowadays. "And Ya Don't Stop" was as good as any Hip-Hop doc, I've ever seen. When was the last time you saw something like that on BET???
