View Full Version : British Hip-Hop: I knew this would happen

Even though I'm British myself, but I can't help feeling British hip-hop is getting real s**t.

I remember back in the day when everyone was complaining how our music wasn't getting promoted, how we had the talent and great tunes, but the money wasn't there to promote it. As a result many artists came and went and are probably out there somewhere doing regular 9 to 5 job.

But I didn't agree with there arguements though, I always said that once the money was there, which in turn got all the airplay and promotion, then the music would get watered down and we'll end up with a load of crap. The same thing happened in America, where every rapper looks like a walking cliché.

Now the same is happening here. While in the States they mixed it with R&B/pop in order to get it to sell, over here they also add Garage/D&B too. It's like they want to corner the "chav" market.

There's some great UK hip hop out there but grime has overshadowed it, which is sad, because grime is utter dog sh!t.

This is true. There's still some great hip-hop coming out of the UK, just like there's still great hip-hop coming out of the US, the thing is that people believed that if labels invested in homegrown hip-hop then the music will benefit, but that's not the case, the truely great artists out there are still struggling the same way they were 15-20 years ago.

Grime is horrible. I really cannot stand it. Same as DnB, Jungle, or Garage.

Grime is UKs answer to hip hop, UK Hip Hop is and always will be a poor attempt at american hip hop, usually with a fake american accent/flow. Grime is at least authentic.

Grime is a sub-genre of hip hop, much like punk/metal/ska etc are all sub genres of rock. Just because it's an American genre doesn't mean that everyone making it has to be American, but yes the ones who rap with an American accent should be castrated.

American hip hop is just as bad nowadays, in fact it's worse in most cases.

Thats equally subjective as anything he said. He's just expressing a common sentiment over here, that British hip hop just isnt as good as the original

I enjoy listening to U.K hip hop but is it me or do ****ty rappers come out of the mainstream, there's a lot of talent but really get unnoticed by these ****ty rappers there, that they do get mainstream attention instead of real talented rappers.

Grime has been quite important to our scene.

It has (had) as much energy as punk did, plus it was a truer voice of england that UKHH is. Shame it's slipped some what.

I'm waiting on those Skepta and JME debuts though. I think they might make a dent
