Try to follow the DVD, but all that really matters are the finger stretches and some scales. Fukk reading chords and shyt.
If u wanna sound good quick,
Learn how to read tabs
Then learn some Blink 182 and Greenday first.
Then move on to Rage Against the Machine.
Otherwise, stretch those fingers alot, play at least 30 mins a day at the beginnings, even of it gets boring and u sound bad.
By the way, I don't play guitar. I play bass, but I just got an acoustic a few months ago.

That DVD should have taught you the basic stretching techniques before it taught u a melody. Check it again. haha.
I can't help you with what sites are good for tabs, but usually good tab sites have great exercises on them. It's hard to find a good tab site nowadays. I know one in Spanish, see if you can follow:
http://bis.lacuerda.net/Recursos/cursoguitarra/
that's the lesson, but the site has tabs.
Also, here are some bass and drum tracks of popular rock songs so u can jam

I think the best thing for beginners is to play in Drop D tuning...that way on the top 3 strings you can make a power chord with one finger covering up all three strings on one fret, which is a lot easier for beginners than making a chord with two fingers stretched two frets apart. Once you tune it to Drop D you can play sh1t like Pantera, Deftones, Soundgarden, etc.

Yeah, including Rage as well.
I'm learning as well right now, but I taught myself to read notes and all that **** as well. I found a bunch of my sister's old sheet music that I've been learning on the keyboard and my mates transcribed a few for the guitar.

it depends on what you are trying to play.if youre playing classical pieces than by all means go with the fingers but if youre doing distorted/rock music than use a pick.
if youre just starting out i would advice learning songs that you like so that you dont lose interest.i remember when i first started i was playing the stuff in the books and i got real bored and put the guitar down for a couple of months.
let me know if you want that guitar pro.i can up it for you.
great thread... Im interested in that guitar pro if you got it

thanx for the links. I prefer to use this program called tabit because it's a simpler interface. But it's harder to find cracks/serials for. Very hard actually.
Check it out at taBIT.NET

I guess when it comes down to it, I can make the drums sound real on my own using Cakewalk. It's just that the bass and guitars still sound terrrible no matter what I do in Cakewalk.
I'm tired of d/l this shyt, I'm just gonna use what works. Thats for Guitarpro i forgot about that program. i hope that Bass thing comes in handy. But still, tell me what to do with the guitar files.
OH MY GOODNESS. Seriously, I wish my urgency could come through fully in this post. STAY AWAY FROM DROP D TUNING.
Beginners should stay away from alternate tunings, effects, and if possible, should go with an acoustic guitar. An electric guitar is fine, but acoustic makes you develop flexibility more than an electric, in addition to breaking in your fingertips better.
Chords are easy, learn some of your favorite songs and they'll come, forget setting out to learn them right now, that shouldn't be the focus. Your main focuses should be:
-flexibility
-development of picking ability
-fluidity of the fingers (getting comfortable to moving your fingers quickly)
***LEARN THE MINOR PENTATONIC SCALE, BECOME INTIMATE WITH IT AND IT'S VARIATIONS***
Once you get the different modes, play along to your favorite songs, it will help flexibility, fluidity, and your overall "intuition" with the guitar. I don't know what type of music you listen to, BUT DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF TO METAL OR EASY POP ROCK. Try and challenge yourself...try to play songs w/ complex rhythms and finger movements, be consistent. You get what you put in.
Practice the following:
-Hammer on/off
-***VIBRATO***
-Bend
-Picking in general
It may seem boring, BUT PRACTICE SCALES!
Going back to the music you listen to, I'm a firm believer that the music you listen to can either hamper or accelerate your guitar playing. Try to develop new tastes, expose yourself to different sounds, etc.

Thanks a lot man. I havent changed the tuning or any of that other stuff. I'm a firm believer in getting the fundamentals down when u do somethin new.
What's your view on using a pick vs using ur fingers? Im not tryna grow my nails out, but some songs can only be played with ur fingers. Plus fingers feel more intimate.

Get good with both, it's a lot easier to get stuck in the rut of finger-dependency rather than pick dependency. Finger-picking is a lot easier, imo, but I've never really studied it technically the way classical guitarists do. Picking is the way to go if you're going modern though.

u don't have to grow your nails to play with your fingers.
And dropping to D is better. All you doing is changing one string. All the scales still work for the most part. Just that on that top string, every noites is moved over two frets.

Not knocking you, but why tell a beginner that? Learning the sound of every chord and scale is what you should (IMO, at least) be doing first. Dropping D is going to eff things up, no?
... and to the dude learning... Cop a good acoustic and a sh*tty electric, man. It gets boring after a whole on acoustic whereas an electric can just keep you interested if you feel bored playing a whole lot of acoustic (but learn the beginner stuff on acoustic).
When you feel like you hear that electric well, move to a better electric and you'll appreciate the sound more. The weight and all... it gets exciting. I remember playing a Les Paul for the first time and staying up for like two days in college just playing that sh*t close. Wow.
Enjoy.
(( and by the way, chicks dig bass players the most for some reason. Dunno why ))

how do u install the RSE file after you combine it?
it happens automatically. When u combine the files, they make up the EXE installer. However, the links provided in this thread don't work. For guitars at least, the first one is good, the second file (002) is corrupted. follow the link to this board. Those links are good.
http://worldwide-forum.be/forum/index.php?showtopic=20546
plus the link for the drums is one file.
And bass players are harder to find, plus we're black. Hence why chicks dig us.
Drummers know how to pound, and so that gets girls off too.
Someone should send this thread to Lil Wayne. Goddam he's awful on the guitar.
Could you suggest a few of those songs with complex rhythms?
Off of the top of my head, pretty much any song by The Mars Volta, eg Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt, Concertina, etc...that would be a challenge. On a similar note, At the Drive-In (their old band) had some comparable but easier rhythms. Some simpler songs would help too, like "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie. Anything by Hendrix is naturally gonna be involved, so there's always that ("Little Wing" maybe). Most "prog" is going to be complex in one way or another, so there's always songs by King Crimson or Genesis.
