I have a 1999 MPC2000XL (model prior to the folding screen) and it serves only to gather dust. I'd sell it, but some clients believe you can't make adequate patterns without it, so it's basically a $2000 placebo.

With the advent of controllers utilizing identical pads and the swing patterns from the sequencer now available for import into all major workstations, the only two reasons for using MPC hardware are dead.

There will always be a market based on preference and perception, but there is no
technical arguments for ever needing one again. Constraining yourself to sequencing on a 1 inch by 4 inch display vs. 20+ inches of multi-track is completely backwards thinking.

Truth, but if you already have an mpc mine as well use it as a controller just for the feel of the pads

But I've got a digi 002, command 8 mixer an mpd24 as my controller a midi keyboard and diff sequencing softwares, and protools of course (the digi 002)

And literally you can't name barely a single thing from the mpc's capabilities that I can't do quickly and easily, on a much larger screen, with a better ease of use

Now I respect the mpc, and want one of my own just as a hobbyist and I'd like to chop samples on it just because, I just couldn't see the need in buying one if you already have a decent computer, or a recording setup

They say the Roland MV-8000's are better products, because AKAI is cutting costs on the production of MPC's. They were bought out by Numark (now Numark Industries, LLC.), the same people who bought Alesis.

as far as software, i've always used Cool Edit and Fruity but i just recently installed Cubase. it looks really cool but i'm clueless right now.

i knowyou have no space for hardware but i would recomend at least a small keyboard midi controller (like the smallest one) and plug it in. if you don't have a flat screen, and if you can afford it, get one and put the little controller right infront of the screen (between the screen and the computer keyboard). or you can do the opposite (computer keyboard between midi controller and screen)

as far as MPC, all just say right now that i've never used an MPC in my life so i'm probably talking out my ass right now.

The MPC has officially become obselete. With all the available software sequencers, Midi Controlers that actually emulate the MPC (MPD 16/24) you can do anything an MPC does with a better interface. Some would pretend that you get a warmer/grittier sound from the mpc but in reality, sound is only a frequency. it's only waves that come out of your speakers, travels the air and reaches your ears. nothing more. What i'm trying to say is that with all that software, if you really know what you,re doing (i'll admit i don't know jack shyt about sound) you can actually perfectly emulate the "MPC sound" by playing with the effects and mixing properly. the only thing left for the MPC is that it has a certain "classic" working process attached to it.

let me put it this way. let's say they invented a cerebral gear shifting system where they would implement a chip in your brain and all you would have to do to shift gears is think about it. your accuracy would increase dramatically but you would always have people telling you "the stick is the way to go, cause of the feel of it." and they might be right just like they might be wrong, who knows.
