sad nas was too much of a simp to realize that.

HHDX: And not to keep rehashing the past, but is there any chance of you ever working with Nas again?
Pete Rock: I don’t think so. I don’t think I want to at this point. I just don’t think it’s gonna be the same. Like, we never developed a relationship with one another.
HHDX: That’s a testament to that one joint [“The World Is Yours”] that people are still asking about when y’all are gonna work together again.
Pete Rock: Yeah, that’s the one joint that everybody talks about. We’ll always have that.
HHDX: And do you want to say anything about the long-standing rumors regarding you and his ex, Carmen Bryan, having a relationship? You wanna touch any of that?
Pete Rock: Nah, I don’t wanna touch any of that. There’s nothing to touch. I don’t even know the person you’re talking about.
HHDX: Do you think the fans thirst for knowledge about an artist’s private life is starting to supersede their actual interest in the music itself?
Pete Rock: Yeah, because it’s not about people’s private lives. It’s about the talent that we have. When you talking to me about stuff like that, it disinterests me. I don’t even wanna talk anymore after you asking me stuff like that. It’s really none of your business what goes on in someone’s personal life. But to say something about that incident, I don’t even know her. I’ll say it again. I don’t know that woman. Obviously, he thinks I know her because he hasn’t spoken to me in 14 years. And if that’s the reason, I think that’s real stupid of him. And you can quote me saying that.
HHDX: And that’s the type of clarification I’d like to get out there. I mean, you don’t know me, but me personally I don’t give a **** about none of this.
Pete Rock: And he don’t know me either. And my thing is get to know me before you start accusing me, thinking the wrong thing. ‘Cause cats out here are haters. No one wants to see me and him get together. Me and him getting together defeats the purpose of anyone else trying to do beats for him, ‘cause I go hard with my music. And when cats try to compete, they can’t **** with me! So that’s the only reason why I think somebody started that [rumor]. It was a diversionary

it had nothing to do with Carmen.....Pete Rock has a FAT ASS MOUTH...

Once he found out he wasn't going to be on the IWW (it was written) L.P , he started dissing the project and the people behind it i.e (trackmasters)....which was a bad move...so in essence it was the byatch KARMA...not CARMEN that did Pete in.

IWW regardless of what hip hop purists and critics (such as myself) think was a succesful album and marked a turning point for Nas, for Pete to diss it was like dissing Nas himself...so i can understand Nas not wanting to work with him again.

If you notice Premier wasn't on that l.p as well, but he didn't go mouthing off about it...and eventually Premier worked with again.

And as far as Pete his EGO IS WAY TOO BIG....yeah THE WORLD IS YOURS was hot..but it ain't one of the hottest joints Nas rapped over..he acts like he "made Nas" and he keeps trying to promote himself as N.Y's finest producers of all time...that's debatable...and for him to say that Kayne is like "new pete rock" is outtta line too, Pete Rock has destroyed alot of relationships cause of his personality...

Don't get me wrong...i love his beats, i grew up on dude...but he really needs to learn some humility and i know that's hard to do in hip hop, but there is a way you go about saying things.

IWW made him a major player in this rap ****...its been said alot of times, people bought IWW and then illmatic

You know? Everybody knows they're dope individually as well as collectively. Of course a C.L. Smooth acapella album wouldn't sell, but neither would an acapella album from 98% of the MC's out there... The interviewer even pointed out that the three hottest joints on SSII were the ones with C.L. Pete Rock may be in denial, but C.L. Smooth is indeed "the best to ever do it on a Pete Rock track."

where's the proof that Nas even believed stupid ass Carmen's allegation that she slept with Pete...

im telling ya Pete was salty with Nas over that IWW inclusion, it was in the Source.....i usually keep a stash of the old ones, im a try to dig that one up.

Yeah at the time i thought it was foolish for Nas to stray from IWW...but now looking back it was a GREAT MOVE career wise, he was able to penetrate the mainstream market, in ways ILLMATIC could never do.

Remember this was the first time Nas was getting radio play with cuts like "IF I RULED THE WORLD" and "STREET DREAMS" remix.

So if anything Nas "grew" from a business standpoint and we have to respect that.

my fault Premo was on IWW............

Ten years on from 'Illmatic', you're now one of those hip-hop artists with longevity and history behind you. You've had to make comebacks, but usually because that debut overshadowed things. When 'It Was Written' came out people accused you of abandoning the observational writing and going for gangsta dollars. How did that reaction feel?

"Well, you never know when people are gonna give up on you, when you're gonna lose 'em. You never know until the record is released, you just have to go with your gut feelings. It's important to balance your name in the commercial world without compromising what you do. You can't listen to what people are saying 'cos they don't really - they're not in your mind when you're doing it, they're not sharing your mission. They're not there creating, they're not gonna keep your family fed, they're not there to motivate you. So you can't listen to what they say too much - you've gotta stay on your path."

"I recorded a few songs for my next album after 'Illmatic' and they were grimy, they were hard. Something happened - the songs leaked out with just one verse on 'em. Marley Marl had them on radio - I was doin' 'em at Marley's house. And it just changed my flow. So what happened was, I said, 'Nah, this has to be a masterpiece, and I'm saying more than I'm walking down the road smoking weed with my pants sagging and my Tims, in my left is my gun, got a ***** on the side'. I said, 'Nah, that's not who Nasir Jones is - that's not who Nas is. They think they know who Nas is, but I can't wait to show 'em who Nas is'. And I got together an album that represented who Nas is. 'If I ruled The World', 'Black Girl Lost'... the things who I really was."

"And thank God I did that. I realised the kids were saying 'Give us another 'Illmatic', but years later I said, 'Damn! If that was the next album, I would have been finished.' Not just because it wouldn't have sold, but more importantly because I wouldn't have had any drive to continue. I would have felt like, 'Damn, my body of work only says i'm about getting high and shooting dice and hanging on the block, and that's it'. And because that's the way I went to the studio to record it, just talking about everything without a care in the world for song structure, musical arrangement, clear and crisp sounds, taking your imagination to the next level, it was just one side. So I think God I didn't do that. It would have been cool if I had been able to do that album, then still been able to make 'It Was Written' next you know? But I just think that I would have lost the drive to do it."

READ THIS ESOTERIK^^^^

This clears up everything CLOSE THREAD!!!

Nas states right there that he had to do what HE felt was right...even though Nas core audience wanted another ILLMATIC that was not the path he wanted to take, and u gotta respect that, artisticly he would have been respected, but CAREER WISE as he says "i would be FINISHED"

Dawg...it's a business, NYC was getting into the flashy high end dope boy world with cats like Biggie and Raekwon , Nas Esobar was the perfrect image to fit into this world.

Also you notice he said a few tracks from the IWW, probally leftovers leaked on the radio courtesy of Marley Marl...well we all know that Marley and Pete was on the air at the time with FUTURE FLAVAS, so it is highly likely that NAS was also salty at Pete for that happening especially if they were tracks that NAS was working with Pete Rock on...so i can highly understand the exclusion of Pete Rock from the IWW set..makes pefect sense.

I still don't see how IWW was a sell out record. The whole album had a dark grimey feel too it. It's definitely not as commercial as most rappers albums who sell at least 2x. People need to grow up and give the album its due respect. His flow was arguably at its best ever.

Whoever says Nas woulda been more successful if he stuck to the 'Illmatic' formula is kidding themselves. 'Illmatic' itself didn't make him a big star, so how would sticking to it have made him a bigger name? And really, he didn't deviate too far from his style- he still had his introspective records, his street joints, etc. He just added extra things that helped get all the way over. If there was no 'If I Ruled The World', no 'Street Dreams remix', no bigger look and feel to his album in '96, he woulda been another one of them dudes who got pushed out of the main picture that year. He woulda been in the same lane as De La, Jeru, Quest, KRS, etc... still "kinda" poppin', but mostly overlooked in favor if the other stuff that was hot at the time.

And to get back on this topic, yes Nas is a dumbass if this is the reason why he strayed away from working w/ Pete.

Pete Rock speakin the truth....I don't know though, if he knew the truth and really valued Nas as a friend and collaborator, he woulda called him up or aproached him a long, long time ago.....

either way, Nas is somwhat of a simp for letting anything that broad does influence his behavior anymore.....she's obviously nuthin' but a jumpoff jane, and prolly was back then as well....she's ****ed everyone man, I mean I could see him still being sore if it was just Pete, but come on man, she boned Hov (in Nas's whip allegedly), Allen Iverson and had a very public bout with a STD, I believe it was gonerehhea.....

and you mean to tell me after all that Nas still wanna hold grudges against people that had their way with her?? That's insane man....if anything he should be pissed off at her, and unwilling to speak with her.....

in the end Nas did somwhat reconcile with Hov, so if that's possible so is a reconciliation with Pete I think.....

Pete was talkin slick on Hot 97 all summer of 96 on Future Flavas with Marley.
It was almost a running joke with them. I remeber them makin fun of Dr. Dre skit on the album and Im thinkin Pete's a sucker. He kept sayin sneak sh*t about Trackmasters and how they were poppy.

Ironically Marley Marl was supposed to be on IWW and completed like 3 tracks in 95 with Nas. 2 of them were leaked and reworked with other QB artists.

I guess Nas n Stoute pulled the Marley tracks and rejected Pete's stuff.
The funny thing about that was with Puffy n Biggie Pete would never come out of his mouth sideways. He would diss Total and all the stuff Puff did but when it came to BIG he never went in. BIG was doin the most blatant commercial poopy crossover tracks at the time but Pete didnt call a spade a spade.

I guess Pete thought BIG was gonna get at him but he never did. So they never worked together.

Its well known Puff n Pete hate each other. I think Puff might have even blacklisted him to a degree. I guess Hev had nuttin but love for him. LOL

I love Pete Rocks music man but he been mad since 1995, I remember how bad he was sh!tting on Swizz beats back in 1999 now I read this?

HHDX: Switching gears here, I mentioned 9th and I’m just curious to know what other disciples of Pete Rock, if you will, impress you? Who all gets the Pete Rock stamp of approval?

man i think Pete is misunderstood, i've heard him on the radio quite a few times, and I've seen him do interviews, he always praises others and comes off humble....

y'all gotta remember it's the job of certain publications like the Source to fuel industry rumors and conjecture, no matter how wild....I remember back in the day Pete Rock getting into it with C.L. Smooth, but truthfully that's the only negative thing I've heard....C.L. confirmed they had a spat, but also said they've moved on....now to me that shows Pete is a guy that is willing to bury the bull****....I think it's more in Nas's nature to hold grudges....especially with producers.....
