Pete was talkin slick on Hot 97 all summer of 96 on Future Flavas with Marley.
It was almost a running joke with them. I remeber them makin fun of Dr. Dre skit on the album and Im thinkin Pete's a sucker. He kept sayin sneak sh*t about Trackmasters and how they were poppy.
Ironically Marley Marl was supposed to be on IWW and completed like 3 tracks in 95 with Nas. 2 of them were leaked and reworked with other QB artists.
I guess Nas n Stoute pulled the Marley tracks and rejected Pete's stuff.
The funny thing about that was with Puffy n Biggie Pete would never come out of his mouth sideways. He would diss Total and all the stuff Puff did but when it came to BIG he never went in. BIG was doin the most blatant commercial poopy crossover tracks at the time but Pete didnt call a spade a spade.
I guess Pete thought BIG was gonna get at him but he never did. So they never worked together.
Its well known Puff n Pete hate each other. I think Puff might have even blacklisted him to a degree. I guess Hev had nuttin but love for him. LOL

Yeah, I remember listening to future flavas one time and pete called the trackmasters the wackmasters and I was wondering why was he hating on them because they had some good beats. They had 1996 on lock with the producing. They made it cool to sample old school hip hop songs and turn them into r&b songs and it worked WELL. I couldn't understand why pete was dissing them.

Also, people have to remember when "It was written" dropped, nas was promoted HEAVY so if he did an album like illmatic, it might have still sold because on the second album he had steve stoute as his manager and steve takes no prisoners.

In fact, one song that had people in NY talking was the song "understanding" and the freestyle he did over the old school beats, no singing and "commercial songs". People forget that when you have the machine behind you and you make good music, you WILL sell good. Peace.

"I recorded a few songs for my next album after 'Illmatic' and they were grimy, they were hard. Something happened - the songs leaked out with just one verse on 'em. Marley Marl had them on radio - I was doin' 'em at Marley's house. And it just changed my flow. [/URL]
I wonder if one of those joints was "THE FOULNESS"...

That explains why Nas had a lil beef with Marly Marl back in the day...

sad nas was too much of a simp to realize that.
HHDX: And not to keep rehashing the past, but is there any chance of you ever working with Nas again?
Pete Rock: I don’t think so. I don’t think I want to at this point. I just don’t think it’s gonna be the same. Like, we never developed a relationship with one another.
HHDX: That’s a testament to that one joint [“The World Is Yours”] that people are still asking about when y’all are gonna work together again.
Pete Rock: Yeah, that’s the one joint that everybody talks about. We’ll always have that.
HHDX: And do you want to say anything about the long-standing rumors regarding you and his ex, Carmen Bryan, having a relationship? You wanna touch any of that?
Pete Rock: Nah, I don’t wanna touch any of that. There’s nothing to touch. I don’t even know the person you’re talking about.
HHDX: Do you think the fans thirst for knowledge about an artist’s private life is starting to supersede their actual interest in the music itself?
Pete Rock: Yeah, because it’s not about people’s private lives. It’s about the talent that we have. When you talking to me about stuff like that, it disinterests me. I don’t even wanna talk anymore after you asking me stuff like that. It’s really none of your business what goes on in someone’s personal life. But to say something about that incident, I don’t even know her. I’ll say it again. I don’t know that woman. Obviously, he thinks I know her because he hasn’t spoken to me in 14 years. And if that’s the reason, I think that’s real stupid of him. And you can quote me saying that.

I still don't see how IWW was a sell out record. The whole album had a dark grimey feel too it. It's definitely not as commercial as most rappers albums who sell at least 2x. People need to grow up and give the album its due respect. His flow was arguably at its best ever.
At that point in time Nas went from raw beats and sick lyrical rhyme patterns to the crispier Trackmaster Sounds and he changed from rhymin bout normal everyday sh*t in the hood to being an italian mobster and in a Nas sort of way kinda dumbed down his rhyme patterns ....Atleast for Nas standards it was dumbdowned for others it would of been rakim-esque or KRS-esque

...and he keeps trying to promote himself as N.Y's finest producers of all time...that's debatable....

I agree with everything you said except for that.

I think he's clearly a Top 5 all-time NY producer.

I AGREE that his ego is out of control...but yeah, I gotta give him Top 5 status, at least.
