and LOL @ these reviews. first of all nobody gives a **** what AMG thinks so that review is irrelevant right off the bat. rolling stone didn't even review RD until 2004 so fukk their revisionist bullsh1t. the source gave RD 4 mics when it dropped then went back years later after jay became a mega-star and gave it a classic rating so fukk their revisionist history as well, plus the source hasn't been relevent since the late 90's which kills their credibility even more. and XXL didn't even exist when RD came out so they are truly on that revisionist sh1t too. if jay was another rapper who faded away after his debut album, you better believe that RD wouldn't get a 1/3 of the attention it currently gets...but whatever.
it's still a dope lp, but the fact remains that there's at least 10 lp's from that year that i'd rather hear over RD...

No it isn't...
Now if you wanna talk about an album that was irrelevant and panned by critics when it dropped and suddenly became a phenomenon, Soul On Ice is one of those albums. That sh*t was average at best. Ras was on his A-game lyrically on the album, but everything else except his lyrics brought that album down. So top 10 of all time? IIIIII dunno. Maybe top 10 of the month it came out, but that's about it.

Bullshiiit!!! I know for a fact that IWW got 4.5 mics from the Source and RD only got 4 mics. When they did their so-called re-evaluation of albums years later they gave it 5 mics. Also, Rolling Stone didn't get it 5 out 5 when it came out and XXL was not even around yet. Your using Monday morning quarterback reviews (years and I mean years) after it initially came out.

the common misconception and cliche thing to say about SOI is that "the beats were wack". the funniest part about this is that 85% of the ppl who say this didn't hear SOI until a couple years ago, so these newjacks are fronting and are mad cause it doesn't bump in their stereos, it doesn't have any songs they can dance to and doesn't have sped-up soul samples all over the place.
the beats weren't wack by any means and actually fit ras' content to a fukkin tee. bird and voodu laced him with beats that didn't overshadow his lyrics and fit the concept of each track. kids were just mad cause there weren't really any joints they could bang in the ride and that right there is why they hate on SOI which is stupid considering the content on the album.
Ur Wrong, I'm Right

Lyrically, SOI is light years ahead of RD or any album that came out that year..yes it didnt have the best prodiction, but they were far from garbage..that's just a lame excuse people use to hate on that album.

What I'm making it out to be?
Soul On Ice is one of those rare albums that almost everyone wants to get their hands on. It's sparse because it got pulled out of stores back in the day and STILL people know about it and give it its dues. It's that good.
I'm not making it out to be anything. Sit down one of these days and listen to that record. It's one of those albums that takes time to grow on you. It is almost as good as Illmatic and definitely better than RD.
Just saying.

Dude, you can talk about lyrics everyday- I'm a fan of lyrical content and all but I don't base my sole opinion around that. I've heard nice lyricists all my life, so that's not a big deal. As a complete album and something worth listening to numerous times, Soul On Ice falls short IMO. It's just my opinion, just like it's your opinion to like it, I'm not changing any factual information or anything, I'm just sayin' that album gets way more credit than it calls for. Sometimes, underground hip-hop fans can be as sheep-like as mainstream fans, and this album proves it.
