Just putting an opinion out there, feel free to chime in with yours.
No... but they're pretty damn good.
In terms of British bands, I prefer the big 4 (The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles & The Kinks), The Cure & The Clash to them, but they're definitely top 10.

Um....Beatles anyone?
Um....Beatles anyone?
Do you know how to read? I said one of the.
I would argue that more bands today (coming out now or currently out) can trace their lineage to The Smiths and Morrissey than The Beatles. But that's a discussion for another thread.

Supposedly it's not representative of their style, but have you heard "How Soon Is Now?" If there is one Smiths song that people love, it's that one. Hell a cover version was the theme song for "Charmed".

Hate Morrissey
Love Johnny Marr(when most people think of the 80's, they have some guitar line that was directly ripped off from Johnny Marr playing in their head)

I think as far as post punk goes, Joy Division got the Smiths beat. Even though they only put out two legit albums, there influence is felt moreso then Smiths.

Violator is a classic album....well, except for Blue Dress, never liked that song.
But Policy of Truth is one of the realest songs ever written.

My vote goes to either The Clash or the Beatles.

Morrissey is one of the greatest song writers of all-time. No matter how much people want to gay bash him. (He's not even gay which is the sad part)

Great post.
I'm also not what him being gay has to do with his music. This isn't hip-hop where the entire genre is based on insane notions of manhood resulting in a caricature of hyper-masculinity (which can certainly be explained away--but again that's another thread).

I will get major hate for this, but he is better then all of the "Legendary" rock front men. Lennon is the only one i would make and exception for.
Just my opinion.
