It seems thats the only way I can have a comfortable grip and use alot of weight.
I can shrug like 365 easily-400 for a few reps with that grip, without it Im probably in the low 200s  Is that cheating or going to lessen development for my traps?
Thats the onlyway I can do deadlifts tho, I wont try it without

What do mean by powerlifter grip? When one hand is facing the opposite direction from the other?

yes
It probably won't affect anything much. I think more reps at lower weight might be better though. I'm not a fan of the big weights but your goals are probably different from mine.

The difference in weight between the two grips shouldn't be that big, but it does happen with some people. I heard of similar stories before. Its more a matter of preference and just plain being used to a certain grip. Some folks pull more weight with an over and under grip and others with same side grip. I happen to pull more with an over and under grip as well. but the difference in weights with both grips is not much in my case(probably 80lbs).
By the way, both grips are pretty much classified/called as powerlifters grip, however theres different names for the leg stance i.e sumo stance, conventional/traditional stance and others.
I use the reverse grip (one palm facing in, other facing out) on Deadlifts and Barbell Shrugs. I'm right handed so my right hand is palm down and I reverse the grip with my left hand for better stability. I don't notice a huge difference in the weight I lift if I switch grips though.
I wouldn't consider it cheating, its only a grip. Your still using your own muscles to pull the weight, the only difference is your more balanced in your grip.
In my opinion, cheating is using straps and other ish like that to assist in the lift. I have a huge dislike for straps. Unless your dead lifting extreme amounts of weights its not necessary.

i have a weak grip. if i didn't use straps on the deadlift i probably wouldn't make it past the 2nd set.

Well using straps isn't going to help your grip. Using straps takes away from building a powerful grip. Start doing some wrist curls, behind the back wrist curls, etc. and work your forearms. You can start by squeezing a Tennis ball throughout the day just as an introduction to help strengthen your grip.

i can see the benefit of using a tennis ball but i dont think the other exercises would help me. the problem isnt with my forearms, my fingers actually end up hurtin and i lose my grip.

I know what your talking about, but the force exerted from your fingers still originates with your forearms. There really aren't many muscles in your actual hand, more tendons and tissue along with bone and ligaments. When you do forearm exercises you put a lot of stress on your fingers which in turn strengthens ligaments and the few muscles in it.
The hand derives most of it strength from Extrinsic muscles which are your Forearms. Boxers, Baseball Players, Arm Wrestlers, and Grip masters work their forearms extensively to generate force from their hands and increase their grip.
I'm just saying, give em a shot for a solid two or three weeks and see if your grip strength increases.

true that. I mostly deadlift or shrug with no straps, the hardcore way   . however, I do use straps on last (burn) sets for deads and shrugs just get that extra squeeze/burn. But for all other purposes, no straps.

i deadlift over 400lbs and I dont use straps. i prefer just chalk, but i'll use gloves if i forgot the chalk. its not cheating at all. the important part is that you're supporting the full amount of weight with your entire body.
if you want to improve your grip strength, i've heard good things about doing pullups with towels. but the best thing i can personally attest to is just holding heavy weight in your arms. pick up 2 115lb dumbells in each arm and just hold them for as long as possible. after awhile your forearms will start to burn like fukk. you just have to train your body to carry such a heavy load.

smfh.
stupid for putting on the most possible full body strength in one lift? its the single best compound exercise (sans snatch, which is founded on the same lift).
