I don't really go back and forth like that, but I've always gone through phases. I used to listen to hip hop only, but when it took certain turns and drove some people toward "underground" hip hop--I was driven toward other types of music. From there, I went through a funk phase, then a classic rock phase, and then a dancehall phase, then a roots reggae phase. Now, I'm in a jazz phase that has lasted a few years (longer than any other phase) and it shows no signs of quitting.

First it was Hip-Hop, then Dancehall, then Roots Reggae and I started getting into R&B right Now I'm in my Soca phase, been in it for the past 2 years.

My phases were more drawn out. When I was about 10 my brother was getting me to listen to 'Pac, then when I was 13 I was listenin to Cash Money and the South in general, then when I was around 15-16 I listened to old school Hip Hop like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, then when I was 16 I was in LA and my uncle introduced me to all kinds of other music that I didn't like at first because of ignorance, but as I grew up I listened to Prince, Michael Jackson, etc, then at around 18-19 I started listening to rock music, and now at 20 i'm completely well rounded with a taste for all Hip Hop forms, Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Funk, and Rock music.

i listened to hip-hop only for most of my life. then around 11th grade i started to like some rock songs and by 12th grade that was pretty much all i listened to. when i graduated i started listening to dixie chicks, but that was my only exposure to country for a long time. until recently i was going back and forth between rap, rock, and dixie chicks, but now i'm starting to get into bluegrass and irish folk music.

really? what got you into that? i remember growing up to some bluegrass. i've always been interested in the possible mashing up of bluegrass and hip-hop but so far, the only time i've heard it attempted was "Deliverence".

Yeah...i've actually just been listening to hip hop non stop lately...mainly commercial stuff to. But there'll be times where I barely will listen to any hip hop.

I remember a phase where I could not listen to anything by drum n bass. It had me warped for a few months. I eventually lost interest.

yeah i go through a electronica phase every so often. it usually bridges the gap from hip-hop to punk or vice versa.

i got into irish folk when i was young because my grandmother is irish/scottish. bluegrass is similar to irish folk being that it was created by immigrants from the british isles. i didn't really embrace bluegrass until i met my ex who's the only black chick i know who's a hardcore country fanatic. i personally can only tolerate it for so long so i decided to start listening to bluegrass so we could meet each other half way. i got to indulge myself in string instruments and three/four-part harmonies and she got her fix of hillbilly melodies, eventhough she's from newark, nj.

Have you heard that new Trio of Doom joint that just came out?

John McLaughlin of Mahavishnu on guitar, Jaco Pastorious of Weather Report on bass, and Tony Williams of Lifetime on drums--a fusion supergroup of sorts. I had my doubts because it took them so long to release it, but I've read good things about it.

^ Great recommendations, though I prefer It's About That Time (Live at Fillmore East) to Black Beauty. For someone with a punk background, I'd also recommend Tony Williams Lifetime's Emergency! (guitar/organ/drums trio)--some of the rawest and hardest fusion I've heard... and one of the first fusion albums out... arguably, the first fusion album.

(I was just listening to Birds of Fire this morning. "One Word" is that sht!)

Here's a review for Trio of Doom that speaks to why the release came so late. Jaco was wildin' and had John and Tony mad at him. (Tony and Jaco almost came to blows.) John blocked the release until an apparently recent change of heart.

http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/06/26/095332.php

John: Tony had Jaco up against the wall and Jaco was like apologizing profusely. He knew he f****d up bigtime. So after 10 minutes of Tony blasting him with both barrels, Tony went into the studio and destroyed his drumkit.

You might peep my AVI and think I love gangsta, but I go through all kinda stages. Was on a post punk kick, ya know Joy Division, Josef K, Danse Society, Depeche Mode,etc..

I'm in a UK early 80ish hardcore punk stage right now. I copped this compilation disc called,"God Save the Queen" which all that 80ish British punk. I heard GBH's Catch 23. Ever since I been obsessed with Hardcore, I downloaded their first two records, and their singles collection, so I got the whole catalogue from 81-84 which is more ill then old school Bad Brains. For those that dig Bad Brains though, I suggest copping or downloading.....

1. GBH-city Baby's Revenge
2. GBH-City Baby Attacked By RAts
3. GBH-Singles 81-84.
4. Ruts-The Crack

There are times when I listen to one genre more than others but it never impacts my appearance.

Usually all it takes is getting an album from a different genre to get me out of that funk.

my taste in music at the time for some reason determines my style of dress. like if i'm in a hip-hop mood it's all ecko stuff ( baggy of course), r&b lots of pants and slacks that actually fit and button downs or polos, and if it's rock i have a shytload of band t-shirts i be rockin.

yeah, when i was younger (8-14 yrs) it was really whatever people around me were listening, sometimes my older sister's musical taste would influence me or sometimes my father's or mother's tastes would direct me. but then like my sophmore/freshman year in high school, i guess i started to show more of an interest in smooth jazz (i dunno why), then my senior year i started listening to a few older jazz artists like john coltrane and charlie parker, but then a year or two after that it switched solely to hip hop for about 2 years then i couldn't stomach anymore of that and i switched back to jazz which i've been on for 3 years...
