I don't know anything about this socalled "subgenre", but I've read descriptions--and it sounds interesting.

Does anybody listen to this stuff? Any recommendations?

I just checked out this video (http://www.youtube.com/p.swf?video_id=IpGp-22t0lU&eurl=http%3A//www.google.com/search%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dbattles%2Batlas&iurl=http%3A//img.youtube.com/vi/IpGp-22t0lU/2.jpg&t=OEgsToPDskIf_5BRno6qapBw5bEhV78k) by math rock band called the Battles, but it's not what I expected based on what I read about math rock. The structure of the song seems pretty straight-forward and not particularly interesting. The song loses my interest after a couple minutes. Is this typical "math rock"?

(I was first made aware of this band when I heard that the guitarist's father is avant garde jazz legend Anthony Braxton (http://www.jazzinamerica.org/images/photos/full/3.jpg). This made me curious.)

uhh, i liked that, but that is not typical math rock. usually i have to be high to "fukk with" math rock

the song is in 4/4 anyway

edit: the drums and bass fukkin anchor that song so nicely

To me, typical math rock would be stuff from the '90s like Don Caballero, Cheer-Accident and June of 44. When I was living in Chicago, that stuff was pretty popular, so I ended up seeing a lot of those bands. To be honest, I was never all that into it. Although, when done well, it can be pretty cool to see live. But it always got kinda boring fast, to me.

That's closer to what I expected.

Pretty cool. Interesting rhythm.

Edit: I found this other video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMTlSRkAVCY&NR=1) of the Battles--probably more characteristically math rock, right? I wish the sound quality was better there. It sounds like it sounds good.

Yeah, Damon Che is a pretty great drummer. Their guitarist, Ian Williams, is in Battles now, which I think it why Battles are getting the math rock tag a lot.

I always thought that so called math metal was pretty good. And I think Meshuggahh and Mudvayne were the best at it, that's why they got so popular.

Slint was the first band to really be classified as "math rock", Slint's album "Spiderland" is really good.

I can't stand Battles...their drummer was awesome when he was in Helmet, this stuff is terrible.
