I didn't have cable in my household, or I should say my parent's didn't have cable in their household when this came out. But I remember being on vacation that year and the place we were staying had cable. I remember that there was a contest for viewers to submit their own version and that was the video that was to air? I also remember that a big deal was made out of the entire thing? I thought I remember seeing the eventual video somewhere, but don't remember - what was it like? For some reason I recall something in black and white but I'm not sure.

Came across this though (Spike Lee?):

Appears to be circa 1992.

I can't get that link to work here at work, but I always thought that Spike Lee (or some other famous black director) directed that video--and that's the only version of the video I ever saw. Parts of it were in black & white--parts showing the struggles of a poor black family (mainly portraying the father having trouble finding work). Other parts were of Prince performing the song on stage with the NPG, and I think those parts were in color.

Beautiful song imo.

Damn, doesn't matter cause the link is dead already. But yeah, that's what that video was. Had the footage you mentioned plus footage of George Bush V.1 and Colin Powell in military decoration and Norman Schwarzkopf I think. Maybe they pulled the plug on that contest at the last minute or somethin, I dunno, could see Prince doin somethin like that. But yeah, great song.
